Description
What would you do if you woke up and found yourself in a parallel universe under an alien sky? This is the question Zax Delatree must answer every time he closes his eyes.
Every time Zax Delatree falls asleep, he travels to a new reality. He has no control over his destination and never knows what he will see when he opens his eyes. Sometimes he wakes up in technological utopias, and other times in the bombed-out ruins of collapsed civilizations. All he has to live by are his wits and the small aides he has picked up along the way - technological advantages from techno-utopias, sedatives to escape dangerous worlds, and stimulants to extend his stay in pleasant ones.
Thankfully, Zax isn’t always alone. He can take people with him, if they’re unconscious in his arms when he falls asleep. But someone unwelcome is on his tail, and they are after something that Zax cannot spare - the blood running through his veins, the power to travel through worlds...

Intriguing, well executed, enjoyable, existential
I pre-ordered the sequel as soon as I finished this. The story, characters, and concept drew me in and captured my attention in a way I haven't experienced in awhile.
I liked that the main character is a version of a social worker and not a warrior type. The plot came across as being rooted in his philosophies of caring for people and trying to do good, and how that was tested by who he encountered and what resulted. In terms of ideas I liked the exploring of meaning and purpose in the face of infinity and the different takes different characters had.
The different worlds Zaxony finds himself in were incredibly creative and unique in my opinion. So many fun visions of what a world could be added a lot to the experience of the story in my opinion.
It's pretty fast paced. I'm making it sound philosophical but it doesn't get bogged down in being heavy about it. To me it all flowed naturally out of the characters and their decisions.
It's a cool book and worth the time. The narrator does a good job. The voices all feel distinct, suited to the characters, and not hard to listen to.
