Description

Raistlin Majere has become a Black Robe wizard and travels to Neraka, the lord city of the Dark Queen, ostensibly to work for her, though in reality he means to further his own quest for power. But Takhisis finds out that the dragon orb has entered her city and sends her draconians to find and destroy the wizard who has it in his possession. Before her agents can strike, though, Raistlin finds out that Takhisis means to take control of all wizardly magic. She has ordered Kitiara to set a trap for the Gods of Magic on the Night of the Eye, when all the high-ranking wizards will be in Neraka to celebrate.

As the forces of light, with help from the good dragons, are turning the tide of battle, Raistlin is forced to flee, for his foes are closing in on him. As the Dragon Highlords vie for the Crown of Power in the Temple of the Dark Queen, Raistlin Majere wages his own desperate battle against Takhisis in the dungeons below and meets again the brother he betrayed. The fate of the world hangs in the balance.

Awesome narration

All 3 books in this series had epic narration and voices. Story wise this was my least favourite of the 3 but still very enjoyable.

Wonderful story - challenging to listen to

Really enjoyed the story; answers a lot of questions from the “Chronicles” series. Narrator is talented but not a good casting choice for this book. Her vocal interpretations of many of the beloved characters were borderline comical and her inflections would lend more to a children’s book or Jane Austen. I found it hard to enjoy the story while blocking out the narrator’s strange choices.

Raistlin for the W

Finally! The untold tale that brought Raistlin to the dark alcove from which he would make the greatest assist in fantasy literature.

Horrible. Yet still forced myself to listen

If you are a big fan of DL and have picked this up because it’s about your favourite character, you will be disappointed.

There are so many inconsistencies between this book and Spring Dawning with some blatant errors. There are so many contrived story pieces that make little sense. The authors were cashing in rather than writing a meaningful story.

Chance of spoilers!

Once Raistlin gets to Neraka, the book took a great opportunity and wasted it. Raistlin appears in the city, gets captured and released, and finds himself acting as a novice cleaning the kitchen for some half-wit wannabe wizards. Then he wanders around the city aimlessly. He meets the emperor and nothing. This is the wizard that helped to defeat Verminaard. There’s nothing no questions about the Golden General. Just a novice wizard hanging out in the city of Neraka.

After he gets captured again and tries to join some resistance movement. I truly struggled to listen after this point. He should have been welcomed into Neraka and witnessed the horrors of the Dark Queens army and learned powerful magic. He was supposed to have observed the birth of draconians. This was just a mess. He is on the cusp of being the Master of Past and Present but is still Raistlin of Autumn Twilight but worse. He lacks sophistication and intelligence and has no plan.

I wanted to like this so badly. Best to re-read Spring Dawning and appreciate the mystery when Raistlin vanished until the end of the book.
