Description

Carentan, France, 1944 - Ethan Martin, a soldier in the 101st Airborne, is fighting for his life. But soon he will learn what peril truly is when he is ripped from his world and transported to a land of magic, swords, and dragons. And though the Nazis are now far, far away, danger is closer than ever.

The eternal emperor, Shinzan has destroyed the mages. Only a few dragons remain in exile. And now that Ethan - son of Praxis Dragonvein - has returned, he must destroy him as well. Faced with unimaginable power, Ethan has only one hope - to reach the dwarf kingdom of Elyfoss before Shinzan can find him.

I loved this entire series

This book was my introduction to audible. When I finished, I was compelled to hear the rest of the series. So much easier to get life done while enjoying a good story. My first year at # audible with more to come!

Awesome Read if You Liked Hunger Games

I had not heard anything about this book before listening to it. I liked the Hunger Games but this was much better. It is a long book and so the author gives lots of details as to the locations, the emotions, the colours, and so on. I love the character development in this story.

Not so good

Not written very well, probably the worst story I have listened to in well over a year.

Interesting Story but very light on in details.

I enjoyed the book, but the pacing was far too fast. Too many things happen to the character and not enough detail or time is spent setting up the premise. For examlpe this is supposed toe a 17 year old boy fighting in WW2. Bam he's in a Fantasy land and really doesn't question much. He can be stubborn and in denial but it is more as a plot device than how a realistic person would think things through. I did not feel like the character fit his description at all either, at no point does he find any use for his supposed parachute Airborne Division training at all. Not once does it give him an edge over any situation. He might as well have just been an orphaned farm boy for how it felt. The magic system is incredible weak and not well explored, by the main character or by anyone else. The main 'romance' aspects to the book focus on a 13 year old girl crushing really hard on our 17 year old MC and him trying to figure out how to tell her its inappropriate. She also falls madly in love with him out of nowhere, it didn't make a lot of sense.

I'm disappointed - I was really looking forward to this. the premise sounded great but the execution was just lacking. Great performance from the narrator though.

Alternate World w/ Dwarfs, Trolls, Dragons & Mages

The first book in the series was good and I liked it. I've even checked out the other two stories in the series that have been released, and from the description, I like where the series is heading so I will be continuing with the other books.

The narration was great, and I really enjoyed it!

Nice, interesrting new storyline

Even tho it is so far a bit predictable, it is a very worthwhile read, great fun, with good possibilities & various options now set up well for future books.

This story covers two worlds both interesting

Would you listen to Dragonvein, Book One again? Why?

The story was very different and I enjoyed it and yes, after awhile I would listen to it again

What other book might you compare Dragonvein, Book One to and why?

None, this is a great story with two worlds that keeps you interested in both

What does Derek Perkins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mr. Perkins does a great job and the characters fit Keep up the good work

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I liked the start when they were transported to the new world , and many more scenes in the book were both humorous and moving

Any additional comments?

I plan on reading the rest of the books in this series

Main character is weak

I'm not sure Mr Anderson knows what an Airborne Ranger is... Even in their early days, during WWII, their hand to hand combat skills were exceptional - yet our hero cannot seem to win a fight! Combat with a sword is different, but there were many fights lost using knives and fisticuffs. .. Good thing he has a skilled 13 year old girl to protect him. Speaking as a veteran combat arms trainer, this element of the story is a serious disappointment. However, the back story and other characters make this a good read. I finished the book in one sitting.

My first book and my first review here....

liked the narration. ... bought the sequel too. .. story is gripping but not exactly the top of its kind. .. a little predictable in a place or 2... but enjoyed the book as a whole.

Cliff Hanger - DON'T BUY 1/3 OF A BOOK

Would you try another book from Brian D. Anderson and/or Derek Perkins?

Sure, if it weren't a cliff hanger.

What did you like best about this story?

YA basis but that is reasonable for the main character's age/mentality.

What does Derek Perkins bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Characterizations.

Was Dragonvein, Book 1 worth the listening time?

It would have been had there been a somewhat plausible conclusion to the book. But it just ended (just like a 1930's - 40's - 50's Saturday morning matinee movie). COME ON!!!

Are you REALLY trying to revive that business model???

Any additional comments?

This story was interesting enough to be a full book (actually it was about 1/3 of a story) but I suspect some marketing person said, " We'll give 'em a taste for the $2.00 special price and get them to buy the full book." Thanks, I'll pass! Other authors give a full story but make the reader interested enough in the ideas/world that they want to hear more.

Go fulfill a prophecy! Again! Why not, right?

"Dragonvein" was okay. Only okay. It took way to much effort to stay focused on this audiobook. The experience was like watching a movie that was designed to mimic a successful you've watched before. You might try to enjoy it but it keeps reminding you of other stuff that you enjoy. It's like there was a standard checklist involved with creating the plot.

-Guy lands in fantasy world through portal.
-Fantasy world ruled by evil wizard.
-Meets three companions; warrior, theif, and old mentor.
-There be dragons.
-There be grumpy dwarves.
-There be grumpy elves.
- Beautiful women trapped in giant crystal.
- And...a prophecy...of course.

None of this is new groundbreaking material for fantasy. It's plot is so basic that it feels like there is a twist, comically ironic punchline, or hidden deep message that went missing here.

"Dragonvein" was narrated oddly as well. The narrator put a gentle air to an adventure that, at first glance, seems like it could be for anybody. However, after a bit one realizes that there is some dark adult stuff in there. Two of the main character's companions have pretty dark pasts. Nothing grusome, but some stuff would be hard to talk about to children sitting in your minivan at the time. The content and tone of the writing didn't seem to match up. Cheery, but sinister underbelly vibe to "Dragonvein" that's for sure.

Genre: Fantasy adventure
Audience: Adult ( don't let the gentle narration fool you.)
