Vex and Vax have always been outsiders. A harsh childhood in the elite elven city of Syngorn quickly taught them not to rely on others. Now, freed from the expectations of their exacting father and the scornful eyes of Syngorn’s elves, the cunning hunter and the conning thief have made their own way in the world of Exandria. The twins have traveled far and experienced great hardship. But with the help of Vex’s quick wit and Vax’s quicker dagger, they’ve always kept ahead of trouble. Now, unknown perils await them in the bustling city of Westruun.

Whether you’re a rampaging monster, a calculating mastermind, or the current possessor of the Golden MacGuffin, someone’s going to come at you. In How to Defend Your Lair, gamemaster Keith Ammann pulls back the curtain on an underrated but crucial part of any tabletop roleplaying game: the theater of battle. The Battle of Serenity Valley was the turning point that led the Independents to their defeat at the hands of the Alliance. Yet the Browncoats had held the valley for weeks against all odds, before being ordered to lay down their arms. Command stated they refused to send in airpower because the ground war was "too hot". But the soldiers who were there insist that was not true.... While picking up a new cargo on Persephone, Captain Malcolm Reynolds is kidnapped by a bunch of embittered veteran Browncoats who suspect him of sabotaging the Independents during the war.

Description
Discover the thrilling origin stories of the bard Edgin, the barbarian Holga, and their whole adventuring party in this official prequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Edgin Darvis’s life is a mess. All that he has left are his lute, his dashing good looks, and his daughter, Kira. After a chance encounter with badass bruiser Holga, Edgin is forced to take a hard look at his bad choices. But the road to redemption is long and paved with unforeseen expenses. Fortunately, the world is full of rich fools begging to be parted from their money.
And so Edgin and Holga do what any sensible entrepreneurs would do—they form a crew.
Joined by the charming rogue Forge Fitzwilliam and Simon, a sorcerer with an intense inferiority complex, the team sets out to line their pockets with both well-earned and ill-gotten gold. Together, Edgin’s crew battles monsters across the realms: gnoll raiders, fey witches, and more fall beneath their sharp weapons and sharper wit. But when they encounter a new, more sophisticated villain, keen blades and piercing blue eyes may not be enough.
Their target? Torlinn Shrake, a wealthy eccentric known for abusing his servants and hosting lavish parties.
The plan? Play dress-up, sneak into the Shrake estate, and fill their pockets with as much loot as they can carry.
The catch? Shrake is hiding a terrible secret: one that could endanger the lives of everyone Edgin has come to care for—even if the loot is too good to pass up.

Great D&D Story and Narration
I liked the story and how it was written. Interesting background on the characters. Good use of D&D game elements as the story unfolded (it seemed like the author actually played D&D and the Forgotten Realms setting). An unexpected, but appreciated twist on one of the party members that will lead into the movie.
The narrator was excellent, capturing the accents and personalities of the characters. It didn't seem like he picked up the script and started reading, but actually pre-read and reflected on how to present the lines. Super impressed with Fred.

10/10 Loved it!
Highly recommend this book to any fan of the Dungeons and Dragons movie, or simply dungeon and dragon fans! As a prequel to the movie, it was a great set up to introduce the characters. The story itself was at parts heartbreaking, at parts drama, and at parts hilarious. Great read!

A fun heist story, wether you like D&D or not.
my only "complaint" is that I would get confused to who was taking from time to time. But over all a great intro story for these new heroes based in the Forgotten Realms. specifically very fun for me since I DM a group that plays in the Neverwinter area.

Only wish I read this before the movie
This book was amazing for what it was. It set up and developed the settings, characters, motives, relationships, and even plot hooks that would come in the movie. I watched the movie first and felt there was a lot rushed for time but if I had read the book first it would have made so much more sense. not only that but the narrator did a fantastic job is matching the personalities and voices from the movie. if you have seen the movie or if you plan to see the movie, this is an absolute must read!

Laid Back Fun
A fun prequel to the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie. It's a pretty simple read, mostly focusing on how the characters came together and formed their band of troublemakers. Much of the book is focused on action and banter, and this is something that can be read just to have fun.
The heroes are a collection of tropes and different personalities, though they do all work together. They're all charming, though I have a soft spot for Holga, the barbarian who loves her potatoes.
The author had a good time playing around with some of the creatures and magic found in Dungeons & Dragons, which added to the charm. That sense of enthusiasm comes through, even if the prose can be a little too cheesy at some points.
This is a popcorn book in its purest form and is something to read if you're looking to be entertained. It's a low stakes adventure that can be enjoyed in one long sitting or over a weekend to have fun, and is great for anyone who knows what it's like to have an adventuring party find monsters instead of loot.

A fun, quick paced story
A really fun introduction to the characters. I felt like I was sitting in on a dnd session for every heist and the way the story was told really honored and enhanced the films story line.

Fantastic! Felt like D&D as much as the movie did!
this narrator has clearly seen the movie and understands the context of what they're reading! even Holga sounded like Holga. didn't dislike any of it. It felt like a campaign I could run as a DM

So basic...
If you thought the dialogue in The Phantom Menace was good, you'll like this. Zero nuance, one big cliche. Was hoping for something written for an audience older than 10. That said, 10-year-old me would have loved it.
