The date is 15 AD. The German chieftain Arminius has been defeated, one of the lost Roman eagles recovered and thousands of German tribesmen slain. Yet these successes aren't nearly enough for senior centurion Lucius Tullus. Not until Arminius is dead, his old legion's eagle found and the enemy tribes completely vanquished will he rest. Histoire
Five long years have passed since the annihilation of three Roman legions in the wilds of Germania. Varus, the general who led the ill-fated army, is long dead, and the bones of his 15,000 legionaries moulder in the forests. But not all the Romans were slain in the ambush. Centurion Tullus, a seasoned veteran, survived, and now he lives for revenge upon the tribal chieftain Arminius, who masterminded the ambush. Tullus will stop at nothing to kill his bitterest enemy or to recover his legion's lost Eagle.

Description
Based on real historical events.
A time for vengeance. German frontier: Close to the Rhine, a Roman centurion, Lucius Tullus, prepares to take his soldiers on patrol. On the opposite side of the river, German tribes are resentful of the harsh taxes about to be imposed upon them. Suspicious that there might be unrest, Tullus knows that his men's survival will be determined not just by their training and discipline, but by his leadership.
A time for war. What neither Tullus nor his commander, Governor Varus, realise is that ranged against them is the charismatic chieftain and trusted ally of Rome, Arminius, who has long been plotting to drive the Romans from the tribal lands east of the Rhine.
A time to die. As Varus' legions prepare to leave their summer encampment, thousands of warriors - directed by Arminius - are massing nearby. Eager to throw off the Roman yoke, the tribesmen prepare a deadly ambush. Only the gods can save the Romans now....

Arminius
This was my fist Ben Kane novel and man did I enjoy it. My only small critique is that I wish it showed Arminius point of view more. I'd type more but I'm jumping into book 2 right now, Hunting The Eagles, here I come.

This is as close to this kind of war as I would ever wish
Well written, well read, and setting the sides as both brave and heroic from each cultures point of view. You can’t bring civilization to barbarians without force and you can’t stay free if aren’t willing to use force. The results of this conflict are still evident today. Who really won the best outcome for their future - who can tell?

Second Listen
The first time I listened to the story there were too many distractions, so several months later I did so again. There are numerous characters so it’s important to pay attention to the story and the relationships. Once listening again (with less distractions), it prompted me to change my previous rating from 4 to 5.
It goes to show your state of mind/mood and focus on the details, make a big difference in the level of enjoyment of the story and I’m glad I did. Looking forward to the next in series.

An Exciting Historical Adventure
The story got off to a slow start, but picked up momentum continuously through the climactic end. The author skillfully portrayed the primary characters, describing their mannerisms, strengths, weaknesses, back stories, and perspectives. Even the minor characters were colorfully portrayed. As with many captivating stories, I found it hard to put the book down and looked forward to resuming the story where it left off. Both the author and narrator were able to take the reader back to experience what life must have been like as a soldier in the Roman army battling the German tribes. Great audio book.

Amazing!
The book is amazing! The story is amazing, the narration is way too musical for my taste.
The sound effects are a bit too much for a grown up book. I don’t want to hear how the horse whinnies and how the trumpet sounds. What’s next? How the cow goes moo and the sheep goes baaahh!?

Superb!
One of the best decisions made for this audible version of Ben Kane's Eagles at War was to choose David Rintoul as narrator. Mr. Rintoul could make a nursery rhyme sound exciting. He's an absolute master of narration of this gritty novel. If you are a fan of Mr. Rintoul's narration then I highly recommend the horror stories he had narrated.
I am thoroughly enjoying the Eagles series by Mr. Kane and am on the second novel currently.
