À propos de cet audio

Reminiscent of Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City, this fascinating account from acclaimed author Jill Jonnes recaptures the 1889 Paris World's Fair. Casting vehement criticism aside, Gustave Eiffel built his tower to be the fair's centerpiece. Perched at the top all summer, he hosted a string of dignitaries.©2009 Jill Jonnes (P)2009 Recorded Books, LLC Europe France Monde Impérialisme Far West

Well done book. Very complete in terms of the tower itself, from it’s construction to its opening, and how Parisiennes came to love it, to those who visited it and how it was (and is) used for security and science. Eiffel’s story is pretty interesting, especially his arrest over the Panama Canal debacle. Full of the excitement and glorious detail about the world’s fair; the author really made this come alive. I was pleasantly surprised to find the side stories of the time so well covered, especially Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. If you like Paris and want some non-wartime history, it’s worth a listen.
