Description

A fun story, the narration is hit and miss

I read this back in the 90s and downloaded it so I could take a trip down memory lane. The story is enjoyable, particularly for old fans of D&D. The main character, Arilyn, is somewhat dull but her companion, Danilo Thann, keeps things interesting and enjoyable. The narration is the only major issue here. I didn't hate it, but Summerer's natural voice seems to be suited to TV or Radio ads. When he's reading descriptions (like the entire Prelude) it just sounds strange. It's like the announcer from Jeopardy started reciting the poem of the One Ring. When he's doing dialogue, it's actually quite good. So, overall, it's a mixed bag.

A Friendship Building Story

That is what I can gather from this story. There are some strong fantasy elements such as a moon-blade or an elfgate however I believe that everything was secondary in nature to the relationships which were discovered by the main characters; Arilyn and Danilo. The story warmed up but it did not contain difficult problems or conflicts needing to be resolved by examining the people in much more detail, yet there was a clear path to fix everything that was previously hidden from Arilyn. I felt more comfortable with the characters but I still did not care very much about them. The narrator was not great with the female voice but much better at the male voices.
