Description

The fate of the world is in the hands of a father and daughter in an epic novel of wonder and terror by Dean Koontz, the number one New York Times best-selling master of suspense.

Since his wife, Michelle, left seven years ago, Jeffy Coltrane has worked to maintain a normal life for himself and his 11-year-old daughter, Amity, in Suavidad Beach. It’s a quiet life, until a local eccentric known as Spooky Ed shows up on their doorstep.

Ed entrusts Jeffy with hiding a strange and dangerous object - something he calls “the key to everything” - and tells Jeffy that he must never use the device. But after a visit from a group of ominous men, Jeffy and Amity find themselves accidentally activating the key and discovering an extraordinary truth. The device allows them to jump between parallel planes at once familiar and bizarre, wondrous and terrifying. And Jeffy and Amity can’t help but wonder, could Michelle be just a click away?

Jeffy and Amity aren’t the only ones interested in the device. A man with a dark purpose is in pursuit, determined to use its grand potential for profound evil. Unless Amity and Jeffy can outwit him, the place they call home may never be safe again.

Includes an audio-only short story, "Parlor Trick," a kind of karmic coda to the novel.

Ce que les critiques en disent

“Ballerini (a Koontz veteran) is tremendous, and Parks makes strong choices in diction, pronunciation, and pacing to bring Amity Coltrane to life. The collaborative effect of Ballerini and Parks' narration works as a deliberate “all-in” to the production, making the audio version even more of a standout.”—Booklist

“Colorful, imaginative…a lively, offbeat novel.” —Kirkus Reviews

“This is a genre-busting work that happily will appeal to readers who enjoy thrillers, horror, sci-fi or just a flat-out well-told story with a breakneck pace that never lets up.” —Bookreporter

Great story, cringe worthy female voice talent

Love Koontz, loving the story so far, and the male voice actor is awesome. If he were the sole narrator, this review would have been 5 stars all the way! The female voice talent however has gone from simply irritating to making my ears bleed.

She emotes so little, and her intonation and diction is so awful, it's like she's reading a foreign language book out loud to herself. The worst part is that ENUNCIATION is seemingly not a thing. The word is cold not CODE, titled not TIGHT-TOED, written not RIDDEN. Was there no audio producer available for this book?

I'm seriously struggling to finish this one. From now on, no matter how much I love an author, no matter how intriguing the storyline may be, if her name is listed as a narrator, it'll be a hard pass.

Oh Boy

I really enjoy Dean Koontz and this story was great. The male narrator did a fabulous job. However, the female narrator was very difficult to listen to and basically ruined the novel. She does not seem to understand punctuation. I will not listen to another book that lists her as a narrator. I do look forward to another in this series though!

Horrible Narration.

The male parts were fine but the female parts were horrible. Poor pronunciation, awkward pauses, and general lack of emotion pulled me out of the story countless times. The story was interesting but I doubt I will listen again.

Story is butchered by the female narrator

The reading style of the female narrator made this very difficult for me to get through the whole book!

don't miss this story due to narration!

If this is your first Dean Koontz novel , you're lucky , because he has a library of stories from which to choose. This is not a typical cookie cutter author, his stories are diverse and his use of lyrical prose woven through take his readers to magical places, this story is no exception. Enjoy the journey :)

It is more of a book for young adults

Edoardo Ballerini is a fantastic narrator and was my big draw to this book. However the plot is very simplistic. I made it halfway through the book before I gave up. It would be a very good book for a younger audience

wow what a journey

This was such a great book. full of action. I normally only do longer books. however, this is great. The voices weren't bad either. I listen at 1.5x though.

Great story!!

I found Imani Park’s reading a little stilted - not a natural flow (sorry Imani), but otherwise loved it

Loved It!

The story was fast paced and I wanted to drive places so I could listen more! I loved the concept of multi-verse travel! The performance was excellent.

Good Idea Poor Writing

I couldn't finish this book. The opponents are cartoonish"misogynist bad guys working for shadowy governing elite. The (writer's?) paranoid worldview sucked me out of the story. The not-subtle "guns good, government evil" underlying message is transparent and silly (wow, was it ever lucky a random homeowner had an unsecured loaded firearm lying around, thereby allowing the protagonist to avoid an exciting struggle against a super smart chimp!). The excessive 3rd person narrative (or is that supposed to be the internal dialogue?) was poetic, but inauthentic. The homeschooled child has no friends and no interest in (or access to?) anyone other than her dear grieving father. The father shields her from the articulate, clean, well-dressed, clearly well-educated but unhoused man that lives in the woods nearby and who frequently comes by to have intellectual chats (and who hands the father the Scientific McGuffin around which the entire plot revolves).

If you are interested in this genre, try reading The Fold, by Peter Clines, a much superior work IMO.
