À propos de cet audio

First published in 1816 and generally considered Jane Austen's finest work, Emma is a humorous portrayal of a heroine whose injudicious interferences in the life of a young parlour-boarder in a neighboring village often lead to substantial mortification. Austen brings to life a myriad of engaging characters as she presents a mixture of social classes as she did in Pride and Prejudice. Her two greatest comic characters are part of Emma's machinations: the eccentric Mr. Woodhouse and the quintessential bore, Miss Bates.

Delightfully funny, Emma displays the shrewd wit and delicate irony which made Jane Austen a master of the English novel. Although Austen thought that only she would like her witty, fanciful, self-deluded heroine, Emma has gained the affection of generations of readers.

The narrator is excellent. She gives all the characters different voices and changes up accent where appropriate (I.e. more posh or less posh)
The story is good, shallow easy listening if taken at face value or interesting satire on the upper classes of Britain if you want to dig a little deeper.

Overall I really enjoyed the book, despite the fact that I really disliked the character Emma. #Audible1

Are you supposed to hate the main character?

This is a beautiful, quite funny story that is beautifully read. Thoroughly enjoyable! I found Emma a little annoying at the beginning but the story is so engaging that by the end I was cheering for her!

Lovely reading

definitely a great book, and one I do not regret listening to. It's fun to see the different style, social politics of the time and overall a very good capture of feminine character, both virtue and faults which I think can even be held up to be accurate to modern standards, only with different airs. There is no doubt that Jane Austin captures an honest human essence in her characters which even with the flowery Victorian language still holds over time.
however it definitely felt long and dragged even though it came to a satisfactory conclusion (a conclusion which lacked the characters human honesty, but captures perfectly the desire of the audience: to have a sweet fairy tail ending)

if only Mrs. Bates talked less!

I found this reading of Emma was well done save that the pacing was too slow for my liking.

My opinion.

Jane Austen masterfully conveys the dullness and boredom of upper class life in rural England in early 19th century. Most interesting character is, of course, Miss Bates! She embodies pretty much everything this book is about (minus love affairs, if you're into that sort thing). I do not regret having read this book.

Nadia May is one of my favourite narrators for Jane Austen novels. She really brings the characters to life and manages to make each voice distinctive but not cheesy. It's a long and involved story that can sometimes make you a little frustrated with the main character but it's definitely worth the time! Emma goes through such a transformation from beginning to end without her notice and the reader (or listener in this case) gets to watch it all unfold. #Audible1

A classic for a reason

I have tried twice now to read a Jane Austen on audible - Emma and Pride and Prejudice and regret to say her stories are not for me. I was not able to finish either of them as just could not listen without my mind wandering. Made it half way through Emma and really did not have a grasp on the plot so went on Wikipedia to read about it thinking that would help me but I couldn’t even make it through the full plot without being bored. Found the narrator in this piece very monotone without much change between characters and events but don’t feel I can blame everything solely on that. I am glad this was a free purchase or else I would be returning it for refund.
