Description

Ty Wilcox doesn’t really believe in superheroes. Then one is murdered right in front of him.

Ty is just a normal guy trying to do his best. He’s single, stuck in a dead-end job with the most hateful boss in the universe, and struggling under a mountain of debt. When he witnesses an impossible battle between two superpowered people, every instinct he has tells him to run. Instead, he becomes the owner of a device that can change his life in ways he can barely imagine. All he has to do is survive for long enough to learn how to use it.

Warning and minor spoilers: Enhancer is a book intended for mature listeners ages 18 years and older. It describes sex, violence, and nudity. It includes light gamelit elements, occasional bad language, and is set in a cyberpunk alternate future. Within its pages, you will find attempted murders, actual murder, home invasions, kidnapping, fights, betrayals, destruction of property, random deaths that can be considered self-defense, a really malevolent boss who treats Ty very badly, and a monstrous bad guy who treats him even worse. Most importantly, you will find gorgeous superheroes and beastkin beauties who are comfortable with unconventional, polyamorous, harem relationships, and there are waffles on offer, as well.

Listen at your own risk.

A good start

According to the book’s description, this book has some light gamelit elements, so I grabbed it for an examination. When Kane says light he means light. The only things that remotely make this gamelit is the fact that they use Huds, heads up displays, and they have stats that can increase via various manipulations or exercise/practice. Otherwise, this is a straight up super hero harem tale that isn’t half bad. The book does feel rushed, and I mean there really is not much time between the time that the MC gains his powers until he is at the end fight with the Boss. Character development comes only from physical changes and is minimal when it comes to actual character growth. The sex scenes come off as a light for of Late night on Cinemax, slightly graphic but not overly explicit if you ask me.

The set up is pretty simple, the main character encounters a battle between two supers, and when the hero is killed, the protagonist, Ty, grabs a strange device that the villain is trying to get and puts it on. Turns out it is the thing that makes mere mortals into super heroes. His device clears his acne, makes him taller, and irresistible to any female that wears a device similar to him.

Lucky dude that he is he meets one at the end of the battle, and wakes up naked in her safe house. Her name is Tempest, and she helps him learn the ropes. His powers allow him to create or upgrade any kind of technology. This potentially makes him the most powerful hero to ever exist. He is fortunate enough to have met the creator of the wristbands that give them their powers. The creator is the Architect, and he just so happens to have been Tempest’s father. He also left like a million schematics that Ty can use to create or upgrade new power items. In between, Ty manages to have sex with Tempest and her Roommate a who is a human deer hybrid. The sex scenes are not as hard as they could have been and play out a little lighter than late night cable. I pretty much say that if you are going for a sex scene have a sex scene. If not fade to black. One thing that drove me crazy is that the deerkin character had antlers. In nature, the only female deer that have antlers are ones with higher than average testosterone levels or reindeer. She was not a modified human reindeer combo. I would let it slide if it was just a cosmetic change, but my understanding was that it was a far more than superficial change. He should have given her doe ears in addition to the hooves and tail. It is details like that that throw me off and out of a book. Easily researched details. Also, I have to say that the end battle was incredibly outrageous and so poorly planned that I cannot understand how the villain didn’t destroy them. Ty had open access to the Architect’s plans, schematics, and concept designs and more than 24 hours to plan, and that was the best he could come up with? He’s already designed a “super suit” replete with offensive and defensive capabilities. He should have been able to design something that would have given them more of an upper hand than they had. It was just silly.

The story is fast paced, and by that I mean there is little development. The characters are stereotypical, for example Ty’s boss is a clear case of Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter being inserted into a non-teaching role. Ty is the reluctant hero, and Tempest is the hardcore hero who brooks no insolence. The villain is loud and obnoxious and pretty much as major A-hole. In other words, just what you expect each of them to be.

Graves, is a good narrator who handles the books poor pacing, i.e. rapid plot advancement, in the best way he can, he also tries very hard to take the two dimensional characters and breath some life into them. His female voices aren’t half bad, but he only did three of them so I’m not sure how much variation or range he has, I’ll need to hear him a few times before I decide on just how far he can push his limits. Either way I enjoyed his work.

The book was a little thin, and certainly felt like it was a bare bones edition of what could have been a pretty epic story. It needed more characterization and development to make this a solid tale. For that reason I’m going to hit it with a 7.3 star rating. There was a lot of potential, but most of it was overlooked. I will get the next book, and hopefully some of these issues will have been addressed.

Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. Getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Adolescent Fantasy Personified

I fully believe that the seed for this story was born in Wyatt Kane's 8th-grade mind.

Ok, it's a comic book story. I get it. And that's what I kept in mind as listening. It's a light-hearted romp with a lot of adolescent testosterone-filled fantasy. And it was a welcome break from the normal stuff I listen to. In the end I liked it and am going to give book 2 a try.

The main character reminded me a lot of the typical anime male virgin characters. Awkward, clueless, but gets all the girls anyway.

Chris Graves was an excellent pick as storyteller for this series. He inflects the right nuances at the right time. He does a good Ty, and I think the Irish accent he gave to the deerkin was great.

Light and entertaining series starter

A down on his luck young man stumbles his way into superpowers and is thrown into a world of superheroes, villains and a chance to live out a life he only ever dreamt of. A mix of wish fulfillment and Superhero/LitRPG genres come together in a light and entertaining first chapter in a new series.

Ty Wilcox is stuck in a dead end job with a boss who incessantly tries to ruin his day to day life and a never-ending mountain of debt to pay off. A typical crappy day ends with him getting off of work late and coming across a battle between super-powered humans. He ends up becoming one of these super powered individuals and has to figure out what he wants to do with his new found powers. The shenanigans he gets up to after this is generally entertaining and has some fun set pieces.

There are a few negatives that came up including some instant attraction/love which is explained, but doesn't let the reader care about the relationships initially. Also the end I wish did more to set up a future big bad instead of delaying that, and kind of just stalling the current conflict to the second book when it could have easily been resolved in this book.

The narration by is very good and I thought Chris Graves did a wonderful job throughout. He has some great unique voices and delivery. I look forward to hearing more of his work in the future.

A light and entertaining read that will entertain fans of the genres this taps into, and hopefully can fully flesh out the world and its characters in future books.

A very good start.

I liked the attention to detail that was given to the gadgets and the different voices and speech patterns of most of the characters. One I disliked - when ones hears that person, it will be obvious

I was given a free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Actually I was given copies of the 1st 3 books. More reviews to come.

I Couldn't Stop Listening

As a female, I really enjoyed listening to an alternate, sexual and super-hero, world book. Listening to mature adult sexual content is not usually for me,.. but each intimate scene is done very well and in such a manner that the listener does not feel uncomfortable or want to stop listening. This book is like Ben Ten meets Harem meets a super hero universe (in a good way of course). Having already listened to books 2 and 3 I assure anyone who is questioning to listen to the next books based on the books ending, that in my opinion, it is worth it and it does get better the further in you get.

Not bad!!

Plot- The plot was good. It was pretty cliche so far, but i still love a good superhero book.

Characters - Characters are starting to develop quite nice. I am looking forward to future books.

Storytelling – superheros, sex and pretty girls need I say more?
.
World Building – I see glimpse of a micro world but thats about it thus far. I look forward to see where he really takes this.

Narration - Chris Graves is great at what he does.

Creative start, but there are a lot of holes

I think the author spent too much time pandering to sexual aspects of the book and not enough on the more relevant technical details that would make the book to be more plausible. It’s a shame because the books had great potential.
The narrator did a fine job and kept the book interesting. It would listen to the next book in the series if none of my favorite authors had a new book out at the time.

Enhancer Stats

Take Away- Enhancer was a fun and perhaps simplistic take on the superhero genre. While I did enjoy it, I am still uncertain whether I will read the next one. (3.5 stars)

Stats:

Plot- The plot was perhaps simple and often utilized overly stereotypical and contrived reasons to advance though it did manage to keep my attention. On the whole it was slightly below average. (2.5 stars)

Characters - The Characters were fun if somewhat two-dimensional particularly when it came to romance. However, the book simply may have been too short for them to truly develop. Additionally, the characters will often make decisions that are illogical and frustrating which further reduces their complexity. (3 stars)

Storytelling – The author's style is often simplistic, lacking in detail. The overall feel is that of a new author that will likely improve. At the same time, Kane’s imagination and pace keep the story moving forward and fun. (3.5 stars)

World Building – Enhancer is set in a vibrant and interesting near future world. Kane, is able to keep the setting relatable while making things like body modification and human enhancement seem to fit in perfectly. (4 stars)

Magic System- This book takes contains an interesting and enjoyable take on superpowers, their origin, and the human potential for enhancement. (4 stars)

Morality rating- Enhancer contains threesomes, explicit sex, language, and superhero violence, and torture.

Really

I enjoyed the book all the way up until the end. I'm sorry, but nobody in their right mind would do what the MCs have done.

SPOILER

If you literally hear your enemy call for someone to come get him after you defeated him. why would you just sit around until it happened, and act surprised when it does. that was a very poor way to set up a book 2.

so 4 stars for that.

A well-written story!

This story is definitely worth the time it takes to listen .
The situations used by the author to build the storyline are quite relatable. Though adult situations were described, they were tastefully done. An enjoyable audiobook that I would recommend for ages 17 and older. I’ve heard several books of the same gender where the author, in my opinion, took to much time lay groundwork for their book before any action took place. Not so with “The Enhancer”!
I was given this audiobook to listen to for free, and I give my honest opinion freely.
