Description

Not the easiest story emotionally

This might stir up a lot of bad feelings for people who have social anxiety and major body image issues, especially related to their weight. It was an interesting choice to tell it first person from the perspective of someone with such low self-esteem. It definitely made it hard for me to see why Caitlyn was falling for Josephine. I understood Jo liking Caitlyn, but Jo is an unreliable narrator when it comes to herself. She underplays her good qualities and blows her faults out of all proportion. It's fair, since we know she suffers anxiety, but it also makes it so it feels like we're told she's smart and capable and don't see it and we certainly see little of what might make her physically attractive because she can't see it. All that said, I think the pay off is worth all the secondhand embarassment and negative self-talk to see her blossom.
