Real heartbreak is unmistakable. We think of nothing else. We feel nothing else. We care about nothing else. Yet while we wouldn't expect someone to return to daily activities immediately after suffering a broken limb, heartbroken people are expected to function normally in their lives, despite the emotional pain they feel. Now psychologist Guy Winch imagines how different things would be if we paid more attention to this unique emotion - if only we can understand how heartbreak works, we can begin to fix it.

Description
Severing a cherished relationship is one of the most painful experiences in life - and cutting those emotional ties to a loved one can feel almost like ending an addiction. Up till now, people recovering from other problems were able to get real help - like AA and rehab - while those struggling in the aftermath of traumatic breaks dealt with platitudes and friends insisting they should "get over it already". But now Exaholics Anonymous treats getting over an ex like kicking a chemical habit.
Written by counselor and therapist Dr. Lisa Bobby, Exaholics offers meaningful support and advice to anyone trapped in the obsessive pain of a broken, or dying, attachment. She helps the brokenhearted heal, showing them, on a deep level, how to develop a conceptual framework for their experience, understand the emotional processes at work inside themselves, find the path to recovery, and free themselves of shame, injured ego, and remorse. In-depth case studies of others' journeys will illuminate the way to future happiness.

Absolutely fantastic read
For anyone struggling with letting go or making sense of heartbreak - or honestly, anyone wanting to understand themselves better as a partner and how people behave in and out of relationships. The first couple of chapters are light but it settles into a very deep, balanced and engaging exploration of the science behind live and attachments. Empathetic and insightful and the narrator, as others have noted, is WONDERFUL. The last section is packed with actionable strategies and a very welcomed section on the intersection of domestic violence and relationships, which is needed and courageous. Well done to the author. Highly recommended to the broken-hearted and healing among us.
