À propos de cet audio

"A fascinating psychological study of an unrepentant murderer" from a New York Times best-selling author (Library Journal).

Battle Creek, Michigan, is famous as the birthplace of breakfast cereal, and the nearby suburb of Marshall is as wholesome as shredded wheat. Well-known for its colorful Victorian mansions, this stately slice of 19th-century Americana became infamous on a frigid night in February of 1991. Newscaster Diane Newton King was stepping out of her car, her children strapped into the backseat, when a sniper's bullet cut her down. The police assumed that the killer was her stalker - a crazed fan who had been terrorizing King for weeks. But as their investigation ground to a standstill, the police turned to another suspect - one much closer to home.

In this gripping retelling of the crime and its aftermath, journalist Lowell Cauffiel recreates the atmosphere of terror that marked King's last days, giving us a story of celebrity, obsession, and what it means to kill.

A story can be ruined by the narration but this was very good. Mr. King is a quite a piece of work!

Well Written

I am unsure why Audible's algorithm included this straightforward exposé of a Midwest spouse murder in the "Funny" subcategory. There is nothing funny about it (not even a little bit). TV Anchorwoman Diane Newton King was shot twice by a sniper rifle at the moment she returned home from a trip to Grandma's house with her two babies.
Author Lowell Cauffiel leads listeners through a twisty-turny case suggesting the perpetrator was a dissatisfied dirtbag of a husband - rather than a mysterious (potentially fictional) celebrity stalker. The author paints a picture of a mind-blowingly selfish philandering killer.. but also doesn't hesitate to expose often ugly characteristics of the victim's personality (she was a bit of a b**ch). The documentary is strikingly balanced.
Unfortunately, Cauffiel failed to hook me. His straightforward this-happened-and-then-that-happened linear storytelling style disallowed insight. My mind wandered annoyingly frequently while listening to the book.

As to presentation: Highbridge Audio Inc. cast this production "adequately". Chris Abernathy's diction, timbre, cadence, and voice-acting are solidly creditable.. but his tone borders on the uninterested throughout. Abernathy is pretty clearly collecting a paycheck on this project. He is undeniably professional.. he just didn’t blow me away.

Altogether, 'Eye Of The Beholder: The Almost Perfect Murder of Anchorwoman Diane Newton King' is worth 5.5 stars out of 10. It was a reasonable distraction for a couple of quiet afternoons for free.. but better options beckon for your Credit.

Uncaptivating
