Description

For Mage Alex Verus, everything is on the line in the 10th urban fantasy novel from the nationally best-selling author of Marked.

Once, Alex Verus was a diviner trying to live quietly under the radar. Now, he's a member of the Light Council who's found success, friends...and love. But it's come with a price - the Council is investigating him, and if they find out the truth, he'll lose everything.

Meanwhile, Alex's old master, Richard Drakh, is waging a war against the Council, and he's preparing a move that will bring Alex and the life mage, Anne, under his control. Caught between Richard and the Council, Alex's time is running out. To protect those he cares for, Alex will have to become something different. Something darker....

Wow! Alex is finally there.

I have loved this series from the beginning. Alex has always looked after his circle through betrayal and strife. I am happy to say that he is finally in a position of power on his own.
A dark mage in a light mage world, Alex has been a bit of a pushover and is hated by many. Always striving for a bridge between the two worlds hasn't gained him anything. Any circumstance where he is assisting the "council" always seems to present someone with the opportunity to question his allegiances.
Not anymore! Alex is a force all his own.
Hunted by the council, and forced by Richard, he has no choice but to take drastic and dangerous measures.
This is the start of a new version of Verus and I can't wait to see his enemies fail.

The best of the series so far

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but this story just took our characters to a new, more nuanced and interesting place. While I wasn’t sure I was going to listen to this one, I am now eagerly awaiting the next installment.

Finally Alex grows a pair

I don’t want to spoil anything but this is one of the best in the series. Amazing story and I couldn’t stop listening. Can’t wait for the next one.

Whoo-boy!

Fantastic! I've been eagerly awaiting this one, and it was everything I wanted.

*possibly spoilery innuendos below. Nothing specific but if you've been reading the books so far you might gleam some givaways from my wording*

My favorite moments in long multibook series are not the climactic endings or the momentous fulfillment of a simmering but held off love relationship. No, my favorite moments are the cataclysmic irrevocable story turns. That moment or choice when everything changes and the main character or characters lives are set on a new course.

For example the book 'Changes' in Jim Butchers Dresden Files or the 'Saboady Archipelago' Arc in the manga One Piece. I am happy to discover that Fallen is this type of book for the Alex Verus series. I really thought I had down where this series was heading to and am so ecstatic that all my theories were blown out of the water.

Granted not everything was a surprise (though there were plenty of those), but that is by no means a negetive. Much of the greatest changes were culminations of long hinted at decisions and consequences. And it leaves me eager to see where things go from here.

Truly excellent and fulfilling!

Amazing book in the series!

Benedict jacka's writing keeps getting better. His word have a way of pulling at your heartstrings. Even though I can't wait for the next book, I feel that it's bittersweet since the series is supposed to end with book 12.

Stupid and Joyful

I feel stupid and Joyful about this book. Stupid, because, I am a fan of the Alex Verus series and I didn't know this book was coming out. I didn't know, until the very day it was released. I feel Joyful, because, DAMN! I LOVE THIS SERIES! I came across this series because I love The Dresden Files and wanted something like it. And it helped that there was a quick "joke" about Dresden in the 1st book. But, Versus stands on his own. This book series is not an imitation of Dresden. And this one may be the best in the series. I have already listened to it twice and will probably start from the beginning, just to build up to this one. Alex takes charge of his life. There were a few moments, when I cried a little. DON'T JUDGE ME! I am weak. And I hope they never change narrators. Gilbert Jackson is one of the best. Waiting for the next one.

Masterful Storytelling

Far better than the 9th. Couldn't stop listening. Must wait for the next book. Looking forward to a showdown with Caldera and Alex.

Zipping Along

For those of you who may have felt that the previous two entries didn't move the plot forward (like me), this book is a return to form. The action is fun, as always, and characters get a lot of interesting development in this installment.

2nd favorite series

This is my favorite series after the Dresdin Files. Great story and all but one of the best parts is (like the Dresdin files) excellent narration. Many audio books, it seems, the narrator is reading the book for the first time as they record it, but this guy has to have read the book before hand (probably multiple time). You can instantly tell which character is talking, and even what mood they are in, just from the narrators voice...before the author/story tells you. if you are thinking of getting this book, start a book 1...you won't be disappointed.

Fans of Jim Butcher should devour this series

Great cast of characters, complex levels of plots that overlay and span multiple books, great balance of action, intrigue, world building, etc, and the narrator is fantastic.
