Woodward, the number-one international bestselling author of Fear: Trump in the White House, has uncovered the precise moment the president was warned that the Covid-19 epidemic would be the biggest national security threat to his presidency. In dramatic detail, Woodward takes readers into the Oval Office as Trump’s head pops up when he is told in January 2020 that the pandemic could reach the scale of the 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 675,000 Americans.

The transition from President Donald J. Trump to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. stands as one of the most dangerous periods in American history. But as number one internationally best-selling author Bob Woodward and acclaimed reporter Robert Costa reveal for the first time, it was far more than just a domestic political crisis. Woodward and Costa interviewed more than 200 people at the center of the turmoil, resulting in more than 6,000 pages of transcripts - and a spellbinding and definitive portrait of a nation on the brink.

As the nation recovers from the Trump presidency, many questions remain: Why was the COVID-19 pandemic so grossly mishandled? How did we get so politically polarized? What caused White nationalist groups to come out of the shadows, and are they here to stay? The answers lie the twisted story of the relationship between Donald Trump and Fox News. Through firsthand accounts from over 250 current and former Fox insiders, CNN anchor and chief media correspondent Brian Stelter unlocks the inner workings of Rupert Murdoch’s multibillion-dollar media empire.

As President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is one of the few White House memoirs to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the president, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a president for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation.

But as he led the probe into Donald Trump’s abuses of presidential power, Schiff came to the terrible conclusion that the principal threat to American democracy now came from within. In Midnight in Washington, Schiff argues that the Trump presidency has so weakened our institutions and compromised the Republican Party that the peril will last for years.

Donald Trump's campaign chairman went to jail. So did his personal lawyer. His long-time political consigliere was convicted of serious federal crimes, and his national security advisor pled guilty to others. Career intelligence agents and military officers were alarmed enough by the president's actions that they alerted senior government officials and ignited the impeachment process. Yet despite all this, a years-long inquiry led by special counsel Robert Mueller, and the third impeachment of a president in American history, Donald Trump survived to run for re-election. Why?

Description
The inside story on President Trump, as only Bob Woodward can tell it
With authoritative reporting honed through eight presidencies from Nixon to Obama, author Bob Woodward reveals in unprecedented detail the harrowing life inside President Donald Trump’s White House and precisely how he makes decisions on major foreign and domestic policies.
Woodward draws from hundreds of hours of interviews with firsthand sources, meeting notes, personal diaries, files, and documents. The focus is on the explosive debates and the decision-making in the Oval Office, the Situation Room, Air Force One, and the White House residence.
Fear is the most intimate portrait of a sitting president ever published during the president’s first years in office.

I expected to be shocked
I expected to be shocked, but alas, I was not.
I was surprised though.
Things have gone too far for me to be shocked anymore, but this book was full of shocking revelations. Its a good read, and I recommend it for Canadians and Americans alike.
I trust Bob Woodward, so every word is credible.
I would have liked a bit more of Bob in the book... as it is, his 'voice' shows up every few chapters.
My only disappointment was that it cut off a few months ago ~ it had to, or he's never be able publish it otherwise ~ but I hope he is hard at work on Fear 2.
If you think Trump is an idiot, your belief shall be confirmed.
If you don't think Trump is an idiot, wake up and read this.

Excellent new perspective
While this book has a lot in common with Fiee and Fury and Trumpocracy, I really liked the way that this book takes you inside individual meetings and conversations in the White House and shows the decision making process (??) that seems to exist there --in a way it is much as I would have expected, but very exciting and interesting to get brought into the meetings and discussions that are happening and watching how decisions get made in this crazy White House. a very worthwhile though somewhat frightening read.

Objective, neutral, detailed
This is the book for making the most close to reality impression about Trump's presidency. It is very hard to think that it is not true with all detailed events (time, places, actors). I started the book having in mind all the documentaries, facts, events, declarations (by himself and by others) I saw about his entire life. Most of them with a negative conclusion. It confirms the enormous ego, the lack of knowledge necessary for the post, but also a sense for manipulating people, a certain naivety, a lack of empathy and a pathological liar personality determined by narcissism.

Interesting and balanced account of DT's 1st year
Interesting and, in an effed-up way, enjoyable read. Woodward managed to paint a picture of DJT that seems believable in its complexity. In some cases, his account made me feel almost empathetic towards the president... he's just another complex human being, like all of us - he just should not be president. But who's fault is that?
Greatly written account of his first year in the White House. Well recommended.

Excellent book describing what is happening inside of the White House. It reveals in details how Donald Trump manages the country & his relations with his staff. A must read or listen title to understand a bit better the climate surrounding the president.

More than what we know
This book gives an outstanding inside into the working of what must be the most dysfunctional White House in recent history, possibly in the last 150 years.
It gives also the reader/listener (Audio version) a very good account how the campaign was rescued by the brilliant, yet evil, mind of Steve Bannon. The book shows that the Republicans did manage (and manipulate) the elector machinery much better than the Democrats in the 2016 elections. Pushing the right 'fear' buttons and managing to deflect the dirt that was uncovered before the election on the then-candidate Trump.
With the very recent developments, it will be like most books of this genre a work in progress. Relatively is written about the Manafort presence, except for the abrupt departure. Those departures are part of the modus operandi of this White House regime that appears to have been hijacked by a little elite inside and that may mitigate the fear that all should have, knowing what we know and what we discover reading this book.

Extremely Depressing...
This was a well written book. I read Fire and Fury also it seems familiar the story being told. I encourage the people who love the president to read this book and to take a moment to think about the actions of the president. This is not how the president of the greatest country is suppose to behave.
You are not going to learn anything new in the book you don't already know. Bob Woodward just wrote it better. It reiterate that the president is pathological liar and why voting is important.
He is impulsive, has a massive ego, vindictive etc. I am really appalled that on this day September 11, when we ought to honor what happen, the first tweet from the president was to attack the FBI, DOJ and Hillary Clinton. And why the heck is Rob Potter who did not have a clearance tasked with giving highly classified information to the president. Just why..
Please, regardless of your political believes, take a minute to think for yourself. Turn off the tv, turn off the radio, look up the actions of our founding fathers who fought for us. Read about Abraham Lincoln etc. If those men had acted like what our current president is doing, what would have become of America? The great America. Think, think, think.
And for congress, grow a pair... Don't be complacent. Challenge him when he is wrong. You want to be at the right side of history.
Lastly, I am curious to know why this book was released on September 11th. Why today? I am yet to figure it out.

Voters and Especially Non Voters Should Read This
I was 17, very close to 18, when I first heard of Bob Woodward and his co-author Carl Bernstein. I remember sitting in a small pub outside Northern KY University drinking coffee, and the TV being tuned to the Watergate Hearings. People all around me (they were probable profs) were talking about Deep Throat, Woodward and Bernstein. I was clueless.
I was more concerned with how I had scored on the SAT tests I had taken earlier that day. I was a very young Mom, had 6 stepchildren, and had been working as many jobs as I could get to keep the family fed, housed and clothed. TV and all that was what the family did while I was working, and I had no time to keep up with current news.
When I found out that I had passed the SAT and would be accepted for my chosen field, Law Enforcement, my first question was "How do I find out more about what happened to cause this Watergate thing that is going on?" Political Science I was told. Well, the rest follows that I have loved the strategy of politics since, and though I don't claim by any means to be an expert I try to read both sides and be informed before deciding what to believe, who to believe and especially WHO I will vote for.
I am happy to say that though I've not expressed these thoughts and practices to my adult daughter, I see her doing the same thing each election, and like me, she was chomping at the bit to be able to vote for the first time.
This was the first book I've read by Mr. Woodward. Its also the first 'tell all' Trump book, if it can be called that. I liked that it doesn't get into the he said -she said regarding the payments to the prostitutes because while I find Trump amoral at best, really in this day and age, who someone sleeps with is not necessarily an indicator of how good a leader they will be. Lying about it, covering it up however, does have indicators. Bigly to quote Trump himself.
Mr. Woodward does not set out to do anything in this book other than to lift the curtain behind which the people who work for Trump hide behind. He does it extremely well.
There is no shaming, no name calling from Mr. Woodward himself. He presents the facts given to him, backed up via recordings, with the people who either work with Trump or have worked with him during his time in the White House. He doesn't tell you what to believe, or not to believe.
The prologue was enough for me, and I think for any rational person, to begin to get a sense of just how much trouble we are in right now. It scared me, and it should scare you. Trump can not admit he was wrong, or doesn't know something, and sometimes somewhere he has been taught that the worse thing that can happen to him is to be seen as weak. Its his manta, and he will do whatever he needs to do, and its apparent from those who surround him - that he means to do WHATEVER - to not be seen as weak. No matter whom it hurts, kills or maims, he simply will not be perceived as weak. Period.
For me, personally, I don't trust Trump, and I can't imagine what happened to allow him to get where he is now unless there was foreign interference, or bribery of some sort involved. There is no other explanation that makes sense to me. Your thoughts may differ of course.
America is a great country, and many people who work with Trump have believed this, and worked to make this true their entire lives. They also are baffled at what he does, his bullying, his inability to understand why when he wants to spend money that is not available they can't just "PRINT MORE" for him. They take papers that would endanger our National Security from his desk, in hopes he will forget about wanting to address the issue.
If you vote, and especially if you don't vote, this is something that you need to read or listen to at least once before NOV, 2018, and see why so many people are calling for everyone who is living in Fear of Trump in the White House for people to Vote.
I don't post many reviews because I never feel I do a good job of giving the author credit when I like what they have written. I feel that here, especially when we are at such a divisive time in our country. I am a US Navy Veteran and it tears my heart out when I see people being so racist, and hateful against their fellow citizens because they believe what Trump says, and then denies he said 20 ways from Sunday, as my grandma used to say.
If you have read this, thank you.

This gave me a nightmare
I have read most of Woodward’s books over the years. I have watched the recent interviews with Woodward about the release of this book. I find writing a review about this book difficult. On one hand, the book is easy to read. It is well written and researched. I believe most of what is written based on Woodward’s proven integrity over these many years. I noticed that many people are writing reviews about the book.
It is not so much the book but my reaction to what was written that I find disturbing. I have attempted most of my life to stay in the middle between the two political parties, but over the years I find myself leaning a bit more to the liberal viewpoint. I make a point of reading the literature of both sides. I must admit that I was shocked when Trump was elected, but I tried to keep an open mind and watch to see if he could rise to the office. But, alas, I observed nothing to indicate that happening. Then the books started coming out but this one was the only one I put at the top of the list because of Woodward’s reputation. I must admit this book scars me; Trump’s belief system is frightening, but Pence scares me even more. This book has given me some additional or new guidelines for evaluating who I will chose to vote for president in the future. I will evaluate their understanding of how government works and their experience in government (that is far more important now). Can they read, interview, listen and understand then analyze a situation? What is their basic belief system and do they read books? In my reading of biographies of presidents, it seems the majority were avid readers. It has become more important to get out and vote.
The book is almost twelve and a half hours. Robert Petkoff does an excellent job narrating the book. Petkoff is an award-winning actor. He has also won a number of Earphone Awards as well as the Audie Award for audiobook narration.

unique perspective
So I binge listened today. Wow.
I have read many books about this administration. This one is unique, as it doesn't focus on the social stuff, the catty stuff. No, this one lives up to it's title, because this deals with scary stuff. perhaps pathological stuff. The collision of a spoiled brat, ignorance, & power.
If you are looking to learn dirt about Kellyanne or Omarosa, this is not your book. If you want to learn about the day to day impact this has on our government, on the folks who make it happen--well, this is it. Other books are like reading the Enquirer. This is a bit more like Caine Mutiny.

It's even more terrifying than you think...
Great book, well reported as usual by Woodward, but man how I wish it wasn't necessary to write it. FEAR really is a warning. We're taking an unprecedented ride with a dangerously unfit man at the wheel. Here's hoping Woodward's book on the next president is an incredibly boring story of peace, stability, empathy, honesty, and executive competence. Alas, this one is not.

political horror story
I struggled with this book. I'm not a supporter of Trump but I am a Republican. I would love to discount this book but that would be next to impossible.

Love the country not the party
I have followed Bob Woodward and read all his books he is honest and very well respected. Fear is truly what most of us in America knew that this White House and administration is doing and small part of us wished we were wrong. Wake up America before it’s too late. Love your country not your party.

It justifies the deep mourning we felt the morning after the election
This book, which is very well written and narrated, tells me that there are a million reasons to be scared of what the future might bring. Anyone wondering how we got here as a nation should and must read this book.

Actually Humanized Trump for Me
I felt the book was great, told the story that should have been told, and Woodward did a good job of staying well within the boundaries of journalistic story telling with minimal bias added. If you disagree, remember these two points: 1. There were biased perspectives covered, but they were those of the individuals interviewed. 2. Just because a story highlights some negative aspects of a subject doesn't mean it's biased, it could mean that subject is negative. If this was any of the other hundreds of authors who have written about Trump, sure. But Woodward has a solid history of telling stories as he has found them, and everything in this book seems pretty reasonable to me!

Depressing and scary
Whatever your opinions about the president are, there are certain presumptions about how people at the highest level of government should behave and things they should know. The lack of knowledge, the scorn of insight, the impulsive and reckless behavior is scary. Steven King writes scary things too but his are fiction and I wish to God that this was too. I won't comment on Trump but I trust Bob Woodward and the specific encounters that he writes about must be backed up by actual on the record conversations as were all of his other books. BE WARNED, if you are already depressed, dont read this. There is no light at the end of the tunnel moment, there is no sun coming over the horizon imagery. This is a surreal place that we find ourselves in and one that we need to quickly get out of. Thanks for at least shining a light on it Mr. Woodward
