À propos de cet audio

An instant New York Times bestseller!

House of the Dragon meets From Blood and Ash in this epic, scorching dark romantasy.

A conqueror captivated…
A witch prophesied to save them all…
An unforgiving world where dragons rule Rome.

Julian Dakkia, Roman general and nephew to the emperor, has played his role as conqueror well. Yet, the moment he laid eyes on Malina, he was enthralled by the Dacian dancer. Years later, the fierce beauty stands before him, a captive on a scarred battlefield, her life in danger. He instinctively shifts into his fierce dragon form to save her, an action that may mean his head on the imperial gate.

The rules of their world dictate that he is the conqueror and she is the captured. But he and his dragon know one thing: their bond has nothing to do with the laws of mighty Rome. She belongs to them. And they belong to her.

Fierce and powerful, twenty-one-year old Malina has survived the loss of her family and she is determined to fight until her dying breath. Still, she can’t believe that the centurion who had once bestowed a secret talisman on her is the Roman general of legendary brutality…and now holds her life in his hands. Nor can she deny how her soul has always seemed to answer his. Slowly she learns that Julian is caught in his mad uncle’s machinations for domination, and helps him plot the downfall of the empire itself.

As they navigate a world where flying deathriders conquer and burn, their love will ignite a firestorm that can only end in heartbreak or death. Or both.

Content Warning: Firebird is an adult romantasy novel that contains dark themes, including slavery in Ancient Rome, which may be uncomfortable for some listeners.

Located in the Roman Empire, this historical romantasy will bring you to the magical world of dragon shifters. Firebird is very addictive, easy read with so much chemistry and banter! We have a very strong and intelligent FMC, Malina that will captivate you in every way possible. As for the MMC, Julianus he is everything a dragon shifter you would expect to be. From touch her and you die, to “mine”, to burn the world down for her, Julian is an amazing character with a great development.
As you can imagine for a master/slave romance and there will be elements that will stand in the way of their love. The last 10 chapters, I believe, I was at the edge of my seat and I just can’t wait for the second book!
For the audiobook I would like to congratulate both of the voices, Blair Dale and Kale Williams, for an amazing performance. However Blair’s Romanian pronunciation was so close to perfection that I was thinking she might be fluent. (I’m originally Romanian )
Juliette you wrote an amazing book! Thank you!

I loved the use of the Dacian people and Romanian language, a language that would not exist without Dacian or Latin language.

You had me at dragons!

This is one of those books where the backlash genuinely surprised me.

I’m not entirely sure why this book got so much negativity. Based on the way people were talking about it, I was expecting something far darker and more extreme. But honestly, I found it to be on the lighter end of the dark romantasy scale.

Obviously that scale is subjective and depends on what you’ve read before - and maybe some people didn’t realise it was dark romantasy going into it, I don’t know. But for me, this wasn’t “dark.”

It has a darker political setting and underlying tension, yes. But the MMC himself never read as morally grey to me. From very early on — arguably from his first chapter — it was clear he wasn’t a bad guy. As the story progressed, it became even more apparent that he was a good man navigating a brutal system, trying to survive it while quietly working to dismantle it from within.

What held this book back for me wasn’t the content - it was the pacing.

It was slow.

Not bad. But… dare I say… a teeny tiny bit boring at times 😅 I found my mind wandering here and there, and I wasn’t fully gripped by it.

By the end, I was interested enough to continue, but I wasn’t blown away. It landed firmly in “okay, but average” territory for me.

That said — I did receive the ALC for book two, Bloodsinger, and I’m already enjoying it a lot more. The pacing is faster, the tension is higher, and the story feels like it’s finally delivering on what book one was building toward. (I’ll have a more detailed review over on Bloodsinger.)

Overall, while Firebird didn’t fully hook me, book two absolutely did. And if previous reviews put you off picking this up — but you’re normally into dark romantasy — I’d say give it a go. Read the trigger warnings if you’re unsure, and decide for yourself.

🎧 Audiobook mention

I immersive read this one (my favourite way to read), and the audiobook was great. It’s performed in dual narration by Blair Dade and Kale Williams, and they both did a fantastic job. Highly recommend the audio experience.
