Many of us are living with the sense that things are not right with the world, as global problems like the pandemic, the climate crisis, polarization, and social injustice mount, leaving us in a state of spiritual PTSD. We have retreated, morally and psychologically; we are experiencing a crisis of disconnection—from one another, from our true values, from joy, and from life as we feel we are meant to be living it. Sarah Wilson argues that this sense of despair and disconnection is ironically what unites us—that deep down, we are all feeling that same itch for a new way of living.

The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion - and a tyrannical one at that. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a ping-pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.

The Happiness Hypothesis is about ten Great Ideas. Each chapter is an attempt to savor one idea that has been discovered by several of the world's civilizations—to question it in light of what we now know from scientific research, and to extract from it the lessons that still apply to our modern lives and illuminate the causes of human flourishing. Award-winning psychologist Jonathan Haidt, the author of The Righteous Mind, shows how a deeper understanding of the world's philosophical wisdom and its enduring maxims can enrich and even transform our lives.

I should have known I was in trouble when I backed my old, beat-up truck into the shiny Range Rover. The driver looked like a gorgeous fallen angel–one who’d been booted right out of paradise for being a giant prick. Good thing I’ll never have to see him again.

What happens after you click tweet? The heart-stopping and definitive account of one of the most intriguing chapters of the "War on Terror" - the heroic survival of hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls whose kidnap by Islamist extremists spurred a global social media campaign and the intervention of seven foreign militaries into a little-known war on the shores of Lake Chad. A spellbinding work of investigative journalism which reveals the blinding possibilities - for good and ill - of digital activism in our interconnected world.

Description
The New York Times best-selling author of I Quit Sugar transforms cultural perceptions of the mental health issue of our age - anxiety - viewing this widespread condition not as a burdensome affliction but as a powerful spiritual teacher that can deepen our lives.
While reading psychiatrist Kay Redfield Jamison's groundbreaking account of bipolar disorder, An Unquiet Mind, Sarah Wilson discovered an ancient Chinese proverb that would change her life:
To conquer a beast, you must first make it beautiful.
Wilson, a best-selling author, journalist, and entrepreneur, had spent years struggling with her own beast: Chronic anxiety. And the words of this proverb would become the key to understanding her condition.
First, We Make the Beast Beautiful charts Wilson's epic journey to make peace with her lifetime companion and to learn to see it as a guide rather than as an enemy. With intensive focus and investigatory skills, Wilson examines the triggers and treatments, the fashions and fads. She reads widely and interviews fellow sufferers, mental health experts, philosophers, and even the Dalai Lama, processing all she learns through the prism of her own experiences. Pulling at the thread of accepted definitions of anxiety, she unravels the notion that it is a difficult, dangerous disease that must be medicated into submission and reframes it as a divine journey - a state of yearning that will lead us closer to what really matters.
Practical and poetic, wise and funny, First, We Make the Beast Beautiful is a small book with a big heart. It will encourage the myriad souls who dance with this condition to embrace it as a part of who they are and to explore the possibilities it offers for a richer, fuller life.

Living with feelings of anxiety
If you get the chance, read this book in audiobook format as it’s wonderful to hear Sarah Wilson narrate her story.
As a mental health professional, this is one of the best books I have read on living with feelings of anxiety.

Best book on anxiety so far
I've lived with anxiety, depression, and PTSD for 20+ years now and this is by far the best book I've read on the subject(s). I appreciate the honesty and openness on the struggles but also the triumphs.
I didn't love the push for her other book about giving up sugar - it didn't really fit in my opinion. But if it helps someone, then great!
Now to remember some beasts are beautiful!

Recommend for any level of anxiety
This book was my first step to acknowledging my anxiety and I have to say that I’ve been handling myself rather well but hearing about her journey and taking on new perspectives was very educational! I’ve gifted the book to someone already.

Fascinating and Holistic Approach to Anxiety
The author sees managing anxiety as a process rather than a cure. I very much like her take on everything except for the dietary advice.

Life changing
This book and this woman is sooo amazing and brilliant. I learned sooo much and it's helpful and life changing. She's so ridiculously smart and her acceptance of herself and her anxiety has really helped me in so many ways. She also has great advice and well researched tips and healthy guidelines but my greatest interest was in her story itself and her performance. I could not put it down.
