Description

Ilaria Tuti's thriller debut explores a remote community in northern Italy - a place of secrets, eerie folktales, and primal instincts.

In a quiet village surrounded by ancient woods and the imposing Italian Alps, a man is found naked with his eyes gouged out. It is the first in a string of gruesome murders.

Superintendent Teresa Battaglia, a detective with a background in criminal profiling, is called to investigate. Battaglia is in her mid-60s, her rank and expertise hard-won from decades of battling for respect in the male-dominated Italian police force. While she's not sure she trusts the young city inspector assigned to assist her, she sees right away that this is no ordinary case: buried deep in these mountains are whispers of a dark and dangerous history, possibly tied to a group of eight-year-old children toward whom the killer seems to gravitate.

As Teresa inches closer to the truth, she must also confront the possibility that her body and mind, worn down by age and illness, may fail her before the chase is over.

Marvellous main character

As well as a plot that combines the dark and brutal history of Nazi medical experimentation with the inspiring friendship of four young people, Ilaria Tuti creates an amazing detective--caring and empathetic and sharp as a licorice whip. Over the course of the book, you can fall in love with the dangerous mountains and forests of the Italian Alps and analyze the dysfunction of small town life. I only have one word for the author: MORE, please.

So captivating

I thought this book was a 10/10. Incredibly interesting, witty, and unique main character. The story was twisted , but beautiful. I felt satisfied and full with the ending.

enjoyable

This was 100 percent not what I expected, at all. I had some preconceived notions based on the blurb, like, that it would be one of those slow, meandering intellectual mysteries. It wasn't. It was weird and gimmicky (in a good way) with a wonderfully well developed plot and fully realized characters. I would hate to work for the protagonist (and reading the scenes where she interacts with her subordinates was not fun, honestly, either), but I'd be happy to have her investigate my case.
I thought it was interesting to start a series with the lead developing Alzheimers- I think that's part of the reason why I expected it to be a more introspective, kind of depressing read. It wasn't, though, and it worked. Her deterioration was difficult to read about. It's such a terrifying disease. But the reader is saved from being too emotionally effected, because, she's like, 75% @$$hole. 25% heart of gold, sure, but man.
Her new lackey was interesting, too. He kind of felt like a reader stand-in, in a way. Like the reader, he is new, with no knowledge of either his coworkers/ the job culture or the local culture, but he muddles through. He compliments the protagonist nicely. He's also not the most sympathetic character, but boy, is he trying hard.
I don't know, I was just so surprised by the mystery. It was so much weirder than I expected. The various plot threads were all pretty bonkers, and I loved it.
There were a few loose ends that I'd be interested in seeing tied up. I doubt it would be addressed in a sequel, but I'm holding out hope.
Anyway, yeah, overall, this was a real gem and I'm glad I finally picked it up.
