“It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle.” You've probably heard this phrase from any number of people in the wellness space. But as Christy Harrison reveals in her latest book, wellness culture promotes a standard of health that is often both unattainable and deeply harmful. The Wellness Trap delves into the persistent, systemic problems with that industry, offering insight into its troubling pattern of cultural appropriation and its destructive views on mental health, and shedding light on how a growing distrust of conventional medicine has led ordinary people to turn their backs on science.

Women are pursuing their health like never before. Whether it’s juicing, biohacking, clutching crystals, or sipping collagen, today there is something for everyone, as the wellness industry has grown from modest roots into a $4.4 trillion entity and a full-blown movement promising health and vitality in the most fashionable package. But why suddenly are we all feeling so unwell? The truth is that deep within the underbelly of self-care—hidden beneath layers of clever marketing—wellness beckons with a far stronger, more seductive message than health alone.

Sixty-eight percent of Americans have dieted at some point in their lives. But upwards of 90 percent of people who intentionally lose weight gain it back within five years. And as many as 66 percent of people who embark on weight-loss efforts end up gaining more weight than they lost. If dieting is so clearly ineffective, why are we so obsessed with it? The culprit is diet culture, a system of beliefs that equates thinness to health and moral virtue, promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status, and demonizes certain ways of eating while elevating others.

Fat Talk argues for a reclaiming of “fat,” which is not synonymous with “unhealthy,” “inactive,” or “lazy.” Talking to researchers and activists, as well as parents and kids across a broad swath of the country, Sole-Smith lays bare how America’s focus on solving the “childhood obesity epidemic” has perpetuated a second crisis of disordered eating and body hatred for kids of all sizes. She exposes our society’s internalized fatphobia and elucidates how and why we need to stop “preventing obesity” and start supporting kids in the bodies they have.

At 29, Kelsey Miller had done it all: crash diets, healthy diets, and nutritionist-prescribed "eating plans", which are diets that you pay more money for. She'd been fighting her un-thin body since early childhood and, after a lifetime of failure, finally hit bottom. No diet could transform her body or her life. There was no shortcut to skinny salvation. She'd dug herself into this hole, and now it was time to climb out of it.

To live in a body both fat and Black is to exist at the margins of a society that creates the conditions for anti-fatness as anti-Blackness. Hyper-policed by state and society, passed over for housing and jobs, and derided and misdiagnosed by medical professionals, fat Black people in the United States are subject to socio-politically sanctioned discrimination, abuse, condescension, and trauma.

Description
Brought to you by Penguin.
Losing weight is not your life's purpose.
Do carbs make you fat?
Could the keto diet cure mental health disorders?
Are eggs as bad for you as smoking?
No, no and absolutely not. It's all what Dr Joshua Wolrich defines as 'nutribollocks', and he is on a mission to set the record straight.
As an NHS doctor with personal experience of how damaging diets can be, he believes every one of us deserves to have a happy, healthy relationship with food and with our bodies. His message is clear: we need to fight weight stigma, call out the lies of diet culture and give ourselves permission to eat all foods.
Food Isn't Medicine wades through nutritional science (both good and bad) to demystify the common diet myths that many of us believe without questioning. If you have ever wondered whether you should stop eating sugar, try fasting, juicing or 'alkaline water', or struggled through diet after diet (none of which seem to work), this book will be a powerful wake-up call. Drawing on the latest research and delivered with a dose of humour, it not only liberates us from the destructive belief that weight defines health but also explains how to spot the misinformation we are bombarded with every day.
Dr Joshua Wolrich will empower you to escape the diet trap and call out the bad health advice for what it really is: complete nutribollocks.

Indescribably Important
Food Isn't Medicine is the perfect read for anyone who has ever struggled with their relationship with food, their understanding of what is "good" or "bad" for their health, or their overall conception of their body and appearance based solely on the scale or the image in the mirror. Dr Joshua Wolrich respectively, scientifically, and thoroughly breaks down the nutri-bullocks of weight stigma, fad diets, and the demonization of many foods, opening your mind to a new, unrestricted view on how you fuel your body in the happiest way possible.

A MUST READ!!
This book is fantastic and should be required reading for everyone, but especially those who have found themselves believing ANYTHING from the world of 'alternative medicine'. I can't believe how many things I once believed to be true, only to find out that the people I had been listening to, literally have no idea how the body or nutrition actually work?!
I loved this book and will recommend it widely.

Excellent
Loved it! Easy listening, informative, digestible, no-nonsense content and narration. Could easily pick up where I left off between listening. Would highly recommend this book for those looking to learn more about debunking myths of food, the affects of diet culture and the shocking reality of weight stigma in healthcare. This is a great first listen for anyone looking to identify, improve or repair their relationship with food, including understanding where those relationships begin to fail and distorted beliefs about food - good or bad. This book is chock full of interesting (and often ridiculous!) studies - made understandable and relatable by the author and narrator. Would highly recommend. Incredible care, thoughtfulness and personality are woven through these pages. Enjoy!

That 1 weird trick!
As a Nutritionist, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading more about misinformation and pseudoscience regarding food and weight loss, and how neither will cure your disease or help you live forever. It’s very easy to read/listen and the language used is not medical or technical even though the author does cite his sources and is an MD. Definitely recommend - great introductory to all things diet culture bullshit. Or Nutribollocks.

Sanity in a confused and misled world
Listening to this book was like repeatedly taking a deep breath of fresh air after being confined in a chaotic, dirty cesspool over many years. I’m talking about listening to the so-called expert advice (often completely in contradiction one to the other, based on the latest fad) that makes us afraid of anything and everything to do with food while completely ignoring the carnage that advice causes not just to our psyches but yes to our physical bodies as well. Bravo Dr W. and,by the way, his narration is very pleasing to the ear.

Outstanding
This book combined with working with a dietitian for my ED has been nothing short of life-changing. I started this book before I was able to access a dietitian and it seriously helped me begin the process of dismantling unhealthy beliefs around food, weight, & health. Me and my dietitian would talk about the chapters once I finally got in. I like his sass too - the delivery made it easy to listen to the more science-based parts. Overall this was a profound book for my and my ED recovery journey. I hope more and more people read it.

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” hearkens back to Hippocrates, the father of medicine. This book is basic but crosses the line for me. Dr. Wolrich states some of the finest minds in medicine and nutrition in this country are simply spreading "Propaganda"! For example he claims Neal Barnard, T. Collin Campbell, Alan Goldhamer, Joel Khan, Michael Klaper, Pamila Popper, Michael Gregory, Grant Davis, Coldwell Esselstyn, Ruby Lathon, John McDougall, Milton Mills, Kim Williams, Michelle McMaKen all PhD's and published authors are all spreading lies stating that a whole food plant based diet and avoiding meat, milk and dairy is the true and only healthy way to live, The science is very solid to support this! But Wolrich claims cows milk is good for you, so is meat, sugar and processed oils!

An excellent breakdown of why diets suck
I was already a fan of intuitive eating. I think this book takes IE a step further and addresses what's untrue, unhealthy and harmful about common diet beliefs. If you're like me and you still had trouble letting go of dieting even after discovering IE, this book can help.
