Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from USA Today bestselling author Rebecca Yarros.

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.

But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away … because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.

She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.

Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom’s protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.

Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

The story sucked me in. I loved the suspense of it, the action, and the characters. It wasn't the most well-written book I've read, but that honestly didn't matter at all, when the story telling was just so enthralling. I didn't want to put it down.

The narration, however, was awful. I'm sorry, but the narrator ought to have waited until they weren't sick before they began narration. The constant sniffling, mouth noises, and stuffy nose was both gross and distracting.

I'm very much looking forward to the next book in the series, but I'm genuinely hoping that they choose a different narrator.

Engrossing Story, Gross Narration

I LOVE this book - for me, it hit so many sweet points - reminding me of all my favourite moments from books I've long loved along the way, yet holding its own and creating a space in my mind where it will live on forever. Classic tropes, flawed and steady new book boyfriend, and fantastic FMC - I loved her mental strength and how she faced her challenges; I most definitely over-identified. I have SO many questions for book two that I hope will be answered. I have listened to this book and read it multiple times; if you enjoyed Anne McCaffrey, The Dragon Riders of Pern, Victoria Aveyard Red Queen, Jennifer L Armentrout's The Harbinger Series or FBAA, Caroline Peckham and Susan Valenti's Zodiac Academy, Then this book is for you.

I 100% recommend getting a hard copy of this book and reading it first, but if you listen to the audio version first, here's my take on the performance ... I enjoyed the middle and end of the narration more than the beginning. It sounded like the narrator was sick / had a cold. Because of the dragon's conversation, the mind talking, and the personal thoughts of the FMC, it wasn't always easy to distinguish WHO was talking when( it helped me to read the hard copy ). Of course, I read certain inflexions of the voice/ characters way differently, but overall an enjoyable listen. I wasn't a fan of the male voice at the end because the sentences felt like one giant run-on chapter. But everybody likes something different. Worth the listen.

LOVE the BOOK ...

I loved absolutely everything about this audio book. The story itself is the perfect pace and it’s the perfect combination of all my favourite fantasy and romance novels. I also read and listen to 20 books a month on average and I rarely rate 5/5 but this just did it for me! I also love both narrators for these characters. I don’t know how I’m going to wait for the next one…

Love every part of this
