Description
The year is 1820 and England has fought its last victorious battle against the French. Rider Sandman, a hero of Waterloo, has finally returned to London to wed his young bride. But instead of being able to settle down to his fame and glory, he finds himself penniless in a country where unemployment and social unrest are raging high, and where men - innocent or guilty - are hung for the merest of crimes. Thus, when the Home Secretary offers him a job as private investigator - to re-open the case of a death-row candidate accused of murder - Sandman readily accepts, as much for the money as for a chance to see justice being done in a country gone to ruins. Soon, however, he is up to his elbows in grisly a murder plot that keeps thickening as Sandman makes his way through gentleman’s clubs and shady taverns, aristocratic mansions and fashionable painters studios, unerringly determined to rescue the innocent young man from the rope. But someone doesn’t want the truth revealed...

my favorite book you really need to read this.

A Terrific Tale, Well Told
My first exposure to a Bernard Cornwall novel will have me coming back for more. Of course, having Jonathan Keeble as narrator adds a star or two to any novel. But this is a well-written and performed story that transports the reader/listener back 200 years. Just terrific.

Mr. Cornwell has a gift
Excellent story by a gifted storyteller. one could say it's a commentary on the direction of western democracies. Well worth the read.

Cornwell and Keeble a winning combo!
This seems to be a one off for Bernard Cornwell. Probably not enough potential for a series, but I enjoyed in very much. Jonathon Keeble delivers a wonderful performance as usual.

Classic Cornwell & Keeble combo
This book is so dam good, just incredible. . The first chapter grabs ahold of you, hooks you in. Bernard Cornwell crafts a incredibly enjoyable story.. Jonathan Keeble , is one of the best narrator you could have. He did the first four books of Cornwell’s Last Kingdom series, I have looked for and found more books for other authors, he narrated, he is just that good, he makes a good book better. if you like historical fiction, this is one of the most enjoyable audio books I've listen to > Highly recommended .
