Histoire
The Eternals, the ruling class of the Future, had the power of life and death not only over every human being but over the very centuries into which they were born. Past, Present, and Future could be created or destroyed at will. You had to be special to become an Eternal. Andrew Harlan was special. Until he committed the one unforgivable sin - falling in love. Eternals weren’t supposed to have feelings. But Andrew could not deny the sensations that were struggling within him. He knew he could not keep this secret forever. And so he began to plan his escape.

Welcome to Ringworld, an intermediate step between Dyson Spheres and planets. The gravitational force created by a rotation on its axis of 770 miles per second means no need for a roof. Walls 1,000 miles high at each rim will let in the sun and prevent much air from escaping. Larry Niven's novel, Ringworld, is the winner of the 1970 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the 1970 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 1972 Ditmars, an Australian award for Best International Science Fiction.

For nearly a billion years, every known sentient species in the universe has been the result of genetic and cultural guidance - or "uplifting" - by a previously uplifted patron race. Then humans are discovered. Having already uplifted chimps and dolphins, humanity clearly qualifies as an intelligent species, but did they actually evolve their own intelligence, or did some mysterious patron race begin the process, then suddenly abandon Earth?

In what is considered one of Heinlein's most hair-raising, thought-provoking, and outrageous adventures, the master of modern science fiction tells the strange story of an even stranger world. It is 21st-century Luna, a harsh penal colony where a revolt is plotted between a bashful computer and a ragtag collection of maverick humans, a revolt that goes beautifully until the inevitable happens. But that's the problem with the inevitable: it always happens.

Bradbury's Mars is a place of hope, dreams, and metaphor - of crystal pillars and fossil seas - where a fine dust settles on the great, empty cities of a silently destroyed civilization. It is here the invaders have come to despoil and commercialize, to grow and to learn - first a trickle, then a torrent, rushing from a world with no future toward a promise of tomorrow. The Earthman conquers Mars...and then is conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient, mysterious native race.

A Fire Upon the Deep is the big, breakout book that fulfills the promise of Vinge's career to date: a gripping tale of galactic war told on a cosmic scale. Thousands of years hence, many races inhabit a universe where a mind's potential is determined by its location in space, from superintelligent entities in the Transcend, to the limited minds of the Unthinking Depths, where only simple creatures and technology can function.

A great human tale with a dash of 1970s misogyny
it was just a couple lines but the way that the author dismissed a scene of violent abuse of a woman by man was a bit troubling

Unique exploration of technology and human impact
This is a slow burn, which I think is great. It's a 3 dimensional Sci-Fi that explores the psyche of the main character and doesn't exclusive rely on the technology for the story. Sometimes I wondered why certain topics were being discussed but after some reflection afterwards I began to appreciate why they were included. The author explored the human implications of this random and dangerous technology in a new direction and I appreciate the book for that. #Audible1

It's Great
It's a great science-fiction story and the scenes between Robby and Sigfrid were the highlight as the story progresses through therapy sessions trying to unlock repressed memories. Pohl's depiction of human exploration by alien hardware is both exciting and nerve-racking, as the unknown presents a common outcome of death and destruction. I happened to have the book as well, which had extra material that expanded the setting and history of Gateway, I wish it would have been included too. The novel however just seemed to end, but I assume it picks up in the sequel. Oliver Wyman was a great narrator and brought the characters to life with a performance that presented their complicated and conflicted past . Great overall and a must listen to for any science-fiction fan.

Blundering Humans in Space
The misogynistic tendencies of the protagonist often got in my way of liking the characters. But if you enjoy stories where the emotions of the old-school characters are paramount to the story, you may enjoy this classic very much.
