Description

Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic science-fiction series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck and her dad's old costume, Elle's determined to win - unless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons - before he was famous. Now they're nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he has ever wanted, but Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake - until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. But when she disappears at midnight, will he ever be able to find her again?

Part-romance, part-love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom.

Cute story but flawed recording

Geekerella is, as I'm sure people will guess by the princess and pumpkin on the cover, a modern day retelling of Cinderella, but set against the backdrop of sci-fi fandom. The fandom created for this series, Starfield, is absolutely stellar (no pun intended), so intricately and robustly detailed that is it almost the main protagonist. The world building here is spectacular.

I enjoyed the story, the narration was decent, but the production was kind of crappy. The chapters narrated by Tristan Morris are noticeably louder, like reach for the volume lest your ears get blasted louder. And there are so many places where different recordings are edited together sloppily, resulting in lines being repeated (Chapter 18 was particularly egregious, with three different chunks of repeated dialogue). That poor editing ripped me out of the story again and again.

Wow

FINALLY a Cinderella Retelling where it focuses on those of us who live and breathe Fandoms. I loved the fact it was narrated by both a male and a female because it just worked so well.

Whoa

Ok I am a big fan of teen lit - I read Veronica Roth, Stephanie Meyer, Susanne Collins and more but I could not finish this book. Possibly you actually need to be a teen to enjoy it but this was one of the few books I couldn't even finish.

Really good listen

I really liked this book! One of the narrators repeated a couple sentences, but the voices were very easy to get used to. The story was easy to follow too. I really enjoyed this book!

Cute Retelling

I thought this was a really cute Retelling of Cinderella that included some fangirl and geek moments. I thought it was a cute take on a story we've seen a thousand times before but I still would have liked a bit more from it!

Cinderella Meets Comicon!

Well written, could not put the book down! Loved both how all my childhood references were mentioned into this book. The characters are very relatable! Can't wait to read others by this author!

Super cute Cinderella retelling!

Love the characters and story. Stuck closer to the original than expected. Would have liked a little more of the characters time to be together and a little more romance. Overall great book. Couldn't stop listening!

Great

This is the first time I ever read/listened to this book, so I was a bit surprised. I loved the story telling, it really made me feel for the characters. I think I even had tears in my eyes at certain points. There was just one part that made me kind of giggle, the male narrator, Tristan Morris, was a little humourous when he was voicing Chloe, like he just really bad in that specific accent, it was when Chloe harasses Elle at the convention. His accent got better though, as the story progressed. A very enjoyable read/listen. Would definitely recommend to a friend

loved this take.

I loved the take on Cinderella that this book did. it's so relevant to culture right now and to a lot of women/girls. The characters where so well done and rounded. There where a few moments that I will admit I teared up for sure. I was wonderful thinking about the story of Cinderella and wondering how they could change it so that it would fit in this world.if I did have a complaint about this audio book it would be I dont think they had the right voice actor for Darien, he sounded much older then the character, worked for the voice of mark but kinda threw me for the first couple chapters. nothing against the him he did a wonderful job but just a preference I guess. all around though wonderful listen!

Fresh new take on the Cinderella tale

I'm what you would call an older woman :-), but I always love a good Cinderella spin off. This book was a nice and well done. The storyline was modernized and well written. If you were looking for a light fun read this is it. Regarding the audiobook though, there are a lot of editing errors, such as repeated sentences. But I easily overlooked those as I enjoyed the story so much.

A Charming Cinderella Story, More than Just a Retelling

Poston does a brilliant job of lovingly grafting the odds and ends of contemporary geek culture over the age-old tale of Cinderella. We all know the story, and all the re-imaginings can easily come off as worn and tired. But Poston's retelling, like any good fairy tale told and retold over time, gives us the heartbeat of the time and space from which it springs. The writing is brisk and humorous, and the characters are constructed with care and wit. Stevens and Morris provide solid performances, and their voices serve Poston's narrative brilliantly. I enjoyed it immensely!

Fun Cinderella story & all the things I love about con

This is a fun take on Cinderella. It also has the moments I love about going to a SciFi Con.
It is sweet and fun - but still solidly read.
I really enjoyed it.

Bad editing

The story itself is a fun spin on a classic Cinderella story. The editing of the audio book however definitely needs working on. Multiple times there are lines which are repeated for no reason and other bad editing notes.

Drawn out and got too annoying

Rarely have I fast forwarded an audible just to stop the pain of a story being drawn out to no end, but this was a first out of over 100 books.

I just couldn’t take the wimpy main character watching her stepsisters taunt her with her mothers clothes and these are teenagers. No taking it back, no threatening to harm them over the district of her dead mother’s most prized possession. I just can’t, too unrealistic considering the entitlement of all the teens in the book. Smh

Review mostly regarding the audible portion...

This is a confusing review to write. I enjoyed the story, but while I found the female perfect, I found the male narrator extremely distracting! He is absolutely the wrong voice for this book. I kept thinking “this sounds like a 30 year old man doing summer theatre instead of an 18 year old kid who although is an actor, acts on television/movies ”. I found it so distracting that at one point I stopped listening to google him. Low and behold we have a 30 (ish based on timeline) year old man who majored in theatre and runs a theatre company. The character is A person of color and the actor is a blond haired blue eyed blond. Why does this matter in an audiobook, you are probably wondering? Because I noticed that on the original cover of the book shown on Amazon the male character is on the cover and is obviously a person of color. On the audiobook cover the only thing different is that guy leaning against the truck is replaced with a unisex looking person with green hair in the front of the truck. Yes technically in the book her food truck coworker has green hair but she is also a she. You wouldn’t guess that the person on this book referred to her until after reading the book. Such an odd thing to change for no reason right? Extra irony points given for the fact that the male character specifically said that he appreciated that fact that Hollywood hadn’t attempted to “whitewash” the character that he was playing (in the movie within the book). Truthfully that whole issue really left me disappointed in the author. I don’t care what color a narrator is. I’ve never even looked it up before regardless of the characters color or ethnicity. But the narrator should be able to fit the character. If the character is an 18 year old kid, they should be able to reasonably sound like an 18 year old kid. And maybe you shouldn’t “whitewash” the cover? Just a few thoughts that distracted from an otherwise cute story.

Absolutely Loved it!!😍😍😍

Both narrations and the story were perfect. This is the first time I felt so connected to a main character in a story. My favorite part was was not just the texts but when Elle started converting Sage to a Star Gunner and kept Darian updated on the progress. it was one my most favorite scenes after Darian's first stunt scene for the movie and second to the last few scenes when Sage breaks entry into the Country club.

fun book, but geeks be warned

there were some mispronounced sci-fi words that took me out of the story. other than a word every so often I would totally recommend it.

Very Adorkable :D

I really enjoyed this story more that I expected .. it was such a breath of fresh air to me and it's been a while since I was last immersed myself in a story like that .. it made me smile the kind of smile that made my cheeks hurt and I still kept smiling, I LOVED the main characters Elle and Darien and I was shipping them so hard that I finished the whole book in one day
I did have a problem with the audio quality, I noticed there were a lot of repeated sentences and the male narrator sometimes forgets to say some words, but overall this book was amazing and highly recommended
