Description

Cass Neary made her name in the 70s as a photographer embedded in the burgeoning punk movement in New York City. Her pictures of the musicians and the hangers-on, the infamous, the damned, and the dead, earned her a brief moment of fame.

Thirty years later she is adrift, on her way down and almost out when an old acquaintance sends her on a mercy gig to interview a famously reclusive photographer who lives on an island in Maine. When she arrives Down East, Cass stumbles across a decades-old mystery that is still claiming victims, and she finds one final shot at redemption.

Overwritten

This Psychological Thriller isn't bad. Elizabeth Hand put together a reasonably interesting tale about the chance discovery of a psychopathic abductor/killer in rural Maine. The tension in the writing is decent, the villain is a frightening sick psychopath, and Hand has a very good grasp of the macabre.
Unfortunately, her protagonist (Cass Neary - a drug-addicted pansexual "artist" with no ethics, little empathy, and a creepy emotional fascination with human misery & dead bodies) is overdeveloped and annoyingly unlikable.
Additionally, Hand's descriptions are uncomfortably vivid and full of artsy Metaphors and Similes that actually detract from the mind's-eye imaginings of the reader/listener (the fleck of green in a neighbor's brown iris "like a shattered bullet-hole" is a bit much).
Lastly, her research into the world of art-photography is appreciated.. but she name drops books/exhibitions and artists that are no doubt well-known to art hipsters but actually have Zero cultural relevance to a casual reader like me (I have never even heard of any of these "famous" photographers her character reveres like Gods).

Carol Monda's performance is professional but nothing special. I would characterize it as "adequate" - exhibiting commendable diction, timbre, cadence, and tone.. but with poor attempts at Maine accents. She should have just abandoned the try at voice-acting in this book.

Taken in toto, I rate 'Generation Loss' 6 stars out of 10. It's a fairly good suspense story once it gets going but feels like the author is hitting you over the head with it. Still, not a terrible option for a couple of snowy afternoons.

Anti-heroine Cass Neary

Loved this book, although not always fond of Cass’ drug and light fingered habit. At least she’s honest about it, and a complex tough lady to boot. Enjoyed watching her grow from inner torment to feeling more empathy. The mystery was intriguing throughout! Only wish the book was longer. Writing is clear, often dark, lyrical.

Glad it was Free

Story is very dull, you wait 6 hours in before a major plot point happens, which ends up being of little to no consequence. I don’t expect every main character to be an infallible hero, but this one has next to no redeeming qualities throughout the book. A lot of the book is poorly describing media we can’t see, which is an essential part of the plot. Overall story is really lacking, but the writing style and narration are good. Would not recommend.
