Description

"An outstanding debut - ingenious, fast-paced and unpredictable." (Harlan Coben)

"Geneva is one of the best thrillers I've ever read. And I've read quite a few." (A J Finn)

How far would you go for someone you love?

Nobel Prize-winning scientist Sarah Collier has taken a step back from work to spend more time with her family. Movie nights with her husband Daniel and their daughter Maddie are a welcome respite from the scrutiny of the world’s press. As much as it hurts, it’s good to be able to see her father more too. He’s suffering from Alzheimer’s and needs special care.

Sarah has started to show tell-tale signs of the disease too. She’s been experiencing blackouts and memory loss. It’s early days but she must face the possibility that she won’t be there to see her daughter grow up. Daniel, a neuroscientist himself, is doing his best to be supportive but she already knows that she will have to be the strong one. For all of them.

So when Sarah is invited to be the guest of honour at a prestigious biotech conference in Geneva she declines, wanting to stay out of the public eye – that is until Daniel shows her the kind of work that the enigmatic Mauritz Schiller has been developing.

Flown first class to the spectacular alpine city and housed in a luxury hotel, Sarah and Daniel are thrust back into the spotlight. As they try to shut out the noise of the public media storm, in private Sarah is struggling with her escalating symptoms. And the true extent of what Schiller has achieved is a revelation. This is technology that could change medicine forever. More than that, it could save Sarah’s life.

But technology so valuable attracts all kinds of interest. Wealthy investors are circling, controversial blogger Terri Landau is all over the story, and someone close to Schiller seems bent on taking advantage of the situation for themselves. Sarah feels threatened and does not know who to trust – including herself. Far from being her lifeline Schiller's technology may be her undoing.

As events spiral out of control Sarah and Daniel are faced with the ultimate question: how far would you go for someone you love?

An unmissable debut thriller written and narrated by Richard Armitage, co-narrated by Nicola Walker and Jane Perry.

This book contains scenes pertaining to dementia that some listeners may find distressing.

Wow

It is hard to believe that this is the author’s first novel. I was hooked from the first paragraph and the roller coaster ride never stopped. I have read this genre for years and I was constantly surprised. I could not put it down. What a brilliant, twisting tale.

Excellent

I can't remember the last time I listened to a book that was so enthralling as this one. Every page was an amazing read. The plot, the characters absolutely brilliant. I sincerely hope they make this book into a screen play. Richard Armitage is a very, very talented writer and I hope he plans more books in the future

A captivating psychological thriller.

What an amazing experience! The story kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The interpretation of the narrators is exceptional and makes us experience a whole range of emotions. A book to discover, I highly recommend it. Congratulations to Richard Armitage and the whole team!

Fantastic audio

It was wonderful to hear Richard Armitage and Nicola Walker read this terrific story together. They’re both excellent actors and their voices are a joy to hear in this taut, twisty and unique tale.
Richard Armitage can be very proud of his first foray into writing and, even though he is very busy with many projects, I hope he doesn’t keep us waiting too long for more.

Worth the credit, worth the time.

The writing was nice, the performance was excellent, the story was super interesting.
As for twisty turns, they were mostly predictable, but still enjoyable.

With all of the positive aspects, I shouldn't have gotten so hung up on this... but I couldn't stop questioning why such highly intelligent characters were behaving like dummies. Much like a James Bond flick, if you can suspend disbelief, it's a lot of fun.

Nice to Listen to

Have you ever thought about giving a different rating on different platforms? I gave it 4 stars here without hesitation, but I just couldn’t do the same on Goodreads. Because where the audiobook was riveting thanks to the voice actors’ undeniable talent, the actual novel was… okay. I don’t feel like I would have been quite as captivated if I had read the text version.

So, there you go, 4 on Audible and 3 on Goodreads. #sueme

Plot:
Nobel Prize-winning scientist Sarah Collier has taken a step back from public life after she started exhibiting symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, just like her father. She reluctantly follows her husband to Geneva after being invited to be the guest of honour at a prestigious biotech conference where a dangerous revolutionary technology will be unveiled. At the conference, Sarah is increasingly confused and suspicious. Is there something wrong at play, or is it all in her head?

There’s industrial espionage, medical ethics conflicts, controversy, murder, effective hooks, a tragic spiral. Armitage’s thriller is fast paced, with a great balance between suspense, betrayal, and medical ethics. Sarah’s emotions are finely nuanced, with eerily realistic depictions of dementia.

However—and this is why I don’t usually read thrillers—the plot twists were rather predictable. Very early on, I was able to guess who the villains were and what would happen. It was still entertaining to read, but I would have liked to be surprised.

Characters:
I liked Sarah’s character and felt used and betrayed for her. Perhaps it’s because I’ve known people with Alzheimer’s, but I couldn’t help but feel sympathetic. However, I thought there was a bit too much of her feelings and episodes—it was soon redundant. I also enjoyed Pavel Osinov’s character and his interactions with Sarah. But I couldn’t stand *all* of the other characters. Daniel was annoying, Helen was annoying, and—most of all—Terri was so cringey and stereotypical.

Writing:
I was pleasantly surprised by Armitage’s prose, especially his captivating setting descriptions and depictions of dementia and Alzheimer’s. The dark, wintry atmospheric backdrop was easy to imagine, and the institute felt claustrophobic, which added to the overall thrill and sense of dread.

But some questions remain:

· Why did the villains do all this, really? Wasn’t it too ambitious, too risky, too unrealistic? How could they even think this could work?
· How come Sarah never thought about giving her daughter a call? Poor Maddie seemed like the victim in this story.
· (SPOILER) How can a smart woman, a SCIENTIST, like Sarah not check her own results or follow the disease’s progression when the symptoms start to worsen?
· (SPOILER) How come the friendly doctors back home didn’t reach out to Sarah following the announcement of her “disease”?

Bottom line, I enjoyed listening to this book, mostly thanks to Richard Armitage’s butter-melting baritone voice, and I think it’s a solid debut novel, but it was simply too predictable and full of plot holes for my taste.

Ugh. Wasn’t there an editor?

I wanted to like this. I really did. And I’m always willing to cut new authors some slack BUT, seriously . . . was the editor new too?
No “spoilers” but I will share some insignificant scenes that were poorly thought out.
There’s the annoying dumb stuff (like having to hike up to the mansion/lab because the cab couldn’t get through due to snow (even though it was in the midst of a well attended conference), then both the villain and the hero miraculously turn up (you know . . . in the nick of time) or when the protagonist runs onto rural road, it’s right as the bad guys are driving on said deserted road, and hit her. Hmmmmm.
BUT, my two biggest complaints are:
1. When the protagonist’s big diagnosis was made public, it never seemed to cross her mind or her husband’s to ensure their daughter didn’t hear about it in the news; and,
2. The villain, who was Canadian, had their citizenship revoked. The first time this was mentioned, I was intrigued! What kind of horrible act does someone have to commit to have their citizenship revoked? Apparently in this case, it was a custody dispute involving an unsuccessful child abduction.
Seriously. I kid you not.
I hate to spoil a mediocre story with basic facts but Canada does not revoke citizenship for custody disputes. The idea of a country revoking citizenship is bizarre (where does the person go?) and it had absolutely no impact on the story, so . . . why? A little research would have gone a long way.
Overall, I’m left feeling really annoyed by this book.

Love it.

What a wonderful listen. The performances were captivating and the characters do well developed. Did not love the ending but it didn’t ruin the story. Waiting for the sequel!!
