À propos de cet audio

Here, from New York Times best-selling historian Francis Russell, is the dramatic story of Germany - from the rise of Charlemagne to the age of Martin Luther, from the 30 Years' War to the iron rule of Otto von Bismarck, and from the formation of the Weimar Republic to the fighting of two world wars.

I chose this book because I was going to Germany and wanted to learn more about the history. There was not a lot available on audiobook. However, this title was disappointing. It reads like a litany of facts about wars and rulers, with little narrative to it. In addition, as an audiobook it can be hard to follow because a person's name will be mentioned once, and then the person is only referred to as "he" (almost everyone discussed in this book is a man) for the next several minutes, leaving the listener trying to remember who the narrator is talking about. There is no social or cultural history; the book is just a chronological rendition of battles, political intrigues, coronations, etc. The narration is not especially pleasing either--quite monotonous. I did learn a little about German history from this, but I could have skimmed the print book in an hour and gotten just as much. Or read a more interesting history.
