People who have read my books, particularly “The War of Art” and its cousins, have a vague idea of the odyssey of a particular solitary guy, wracked with guilt and riven by self-doubt, as he struggles toward his destiny as a writer. But they have only the scantiest conception of the particulars of that journey. These particulars I’m hoping may be of use to others as they wrestle with their own version of that same odyssey. So let me try to strip it down. Let me tell the parts I normally leave out.

There is a new revolution happening in sports as more and more athletes are basing their success on this game-changing combination: health, nutrition, training, recovery, and mindset. Unfortunately, the evidence-based techniques that the expert PhDs, academic institutions, and professional performance staffs follow can be in stark contrast to what many athletes actually practice. When combined with the noise of social media, old-school traditions, and bro-science, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction.

Description
The New York Times bestselling author and human performance expert tests his knowledge and theories on his own aging body in a quest to become an expert skier at age fifty-three.
Gnar: adjective, short for “gnarly,” def: any environment or situation that is high in perceived risk and high in actual risk.
Country: noun, def: any defined territory, landscape or terrain, fictitious or real.
Cutting-edge discoveries in embodied cognition, flow science, and network neuroscience have revolutionized how we think about peak performance aging. On paper, these discoveries should allow older athletes to progress in supposedly “impossible” activities like park skiing (think: jumps and tricks.) To see if theory worked in practice, Kotler conducted his own ass-on-the-line experiment in applied neuroscience and later-in-life skill acquisition: He tried to teach an old dog some new tricks.
Recently, top pros have been performing well past a previously considered prime: World-class athletes such as Kelly Slater, the greatest surfer of all time, is winning competitions in his fifties; Tom Brady can beat players half his age. But what about the rest of us?
Steven Kotler has been studying human performance for thirty years, and taught hundreds of thousands of people at all skill levels, age groups, and walks of life, how to achieve peak performance. Could his own advice work for him?
Gnar Country is the chronicle of his experience pushing his own aging body past preconceived limits. It’s a book about goals and grit and progression. It’s an antidote for weariness that is inspiring, practical, and, often hilarious. It is about growing old and staying rad. It’s a feverish listening experience that makes you put down the book, get out there, and move. Whether hurtling down a mountain side, running your first 10K race, or taking your career to new heights, Kotler challenges us to test ourselves, surpass our limits, and achieve our own impossible, whatever it might be. Part personal journey, part science experiment, part how-to guide, Kotler takes us on his punk rock, high-velocity joy-ride for a better life in spite—and often in defiance of—the perceived limitations of the aging human body.

So Bad
As a skier and student of flow I was fascinated by Steven talking about findings from the Flow Institute and quantitative psychological and cognitive studies on a podcast. However, like another reviewer said, this is just a book about an old skier setting out goals for himself. I wish I could return it and get one of his more instructive books.

Nothing really about Flow - a ski journal
If you want to get excited about the next ski season this book is for you! If you want read about flow, look somewhere else. I’m about half way through the book and I will finish. I Ski Utah. I have felt the feeling of being in the powder, floating down a mountain and it is really awesome. I am nowhere near his expert level. The guy reading the book does a great job. I am very impressed with the author’s dedication. But he gives basically no flow science. And I thought he would integrate this into his ski stories. But he didn’t. He is reading from his journal on how he got ready to be better skier in his 50’s. I am not in favor of his attitude towards tourists and all of his “hip” jargon he thinks “the kids” use today. It’s As if someone can’t simply ski for the pure enjoyment of being in the mountains and do their thing, all of these apparent tourists were all in his way. It’s Like a person has to have been skiing 50 years and make that their priority. Most people love doing things because of WHO they are with. I don’t disregard him for making skiing his top priority in his life above even his wife, but he shouldn’t t disrespect everyone else for their life choices either. Just ski and find your flow and forget about what everyone else is doing. He’s clearly very goal oriented and I respect him for his insane dedication and schedule to fit everything in to meet his ski goals, and work obligations.
I wish the author every great and continued success! He is obviously very focused on what’s important to him and that was inspiring to me. He is driven even in the face of great odds.
Reasons you may want to read this book:
Hear how he overcame obstacles to achieve his goals. Including vertigo while skiing, often.
You are a die hard skier and want to get pumped up for skiing!

Waste of time and a Audible credit
I couldn’t finish it; not even close. If you are looking for a guide to get into, stay in, and live in Flow, this isn’t it. There are many better books for that purpose. If you want to listen to the journal of a man in his fifties talk like he’s a pompous 16 year old who elevates himself above all others because of his “radness,” then this is your book. As a 60 year old that continues to explore the edges of my comfort zones in the sports I pursue, I applaud the author for doing just that with his pursuit of park skiing. That’s the only positive statement I can make about this waste of digital space.

Not unless you really like skiing
I’m a 50 year old skier interested in improving my ski skills who just read and loved Art Of Impossible. I thought this would be the perfect book for me. Not so much. It’s more of a ski diary than anything else. I’m over halfway through and I’m just waiting for the science nuggets, which aren’t coming nearly frequently enough. If I had intimate knowledge of the ski resorts and runs he’s describing I may enjoy it more. But I ski in Utah.
