Description

"Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney plumbs the depths of marriage, motherhood and friendship with warmth and wit. I devoured it in one gulp! Treat yourself to some Good Company." (Maria Semple, author of Today Will Be Different)

A warm, incisive new novel about the enduring bonds of marriage and friendship from Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, author of the instant New York Times best seller The Nest

Flora Mancini has been happily married for more than 20 years. But everything she thought she knew about herself, her marriage, and her relationship with her best friend, Margot, is upended when she stumbles upon an envelope containing her husband’s wedding ring - the one he claimed he lost one summer when their daughter, Ruby, was five.

Flora and Julian struggled for years, scraping together just enough acting work to raise Ruby in Manhattan and keep Julian’s small theater company - Good Company - afloat. A move to Los Angeles brought their first real career successes, a chance to breathe easier, and a reunion with Margot, now a bona fide television star. But has their new life been built on lies? What happened that summer all those years ago? And what happens now?

With Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s signature tenderness, humor, and insight, Good Company tells a bighearted story of the lifelong relationships that both wound and heal us.

Friendship, Family, Love, Betrayal and Hope

“Watch out for the old girlfriends.”

This book is well written and smoothly transitions between different POVs. Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney really takes her time in unfolding the story behind the discovered “lost” wedding ring. Much of the book’s storytelling goes through character flashbacks and reminiscing. I would would often get impatient and just want to know what happened already! A big part of reality is touched on, such as relationships changing, infidelity and betrayal. Many things are addressed, such as how unfair the entertainment industry is for women and how eating disorders are pretty much normalized.

I did find the last 3 hours to go by slower. Once I get to the bottom of all the dirt, I feel less inclined to binge. I also feel that the drama was not as heightened as I would have liked it to be. I found the story to be somewhat of a realistic downer at times. I even got annoyed with how Margot was extremely selfish with her and Flora’s friendship. A woman can make so many sacrifices for a husband and child, without a selfish doubt. Many women constantly place others’ needs before their own and just love unconditionally and forgivingly.
