À propos de cet audio
For love
For legacy.
FOR SCIENCE!
Maxim Volt worked very hard NOT to become the local madman.
He didn’t plot doom upon his enemies (even when they deserved it).
He didn’t stitch together monsters with parts 'recycled' from the local graveyard.
Why, he barely allowed himself a maniacal laugh or two!
And yet, he still somehow ended up getting kicked out of university, banished from the family estate, and inheriting a decrepit castle high in the mountains of Eastern Europe, complete with a spooky but devoted maid. And on top of that, he finds himself caring for an injured werewolf girl, reuniting with his manic yandere lab assistant, and gathering allies to fight a mechanized industrialist looking to usurp him.
Because while he might not be mad, he is the master of Grimmwald Castle. And no one’s taking that or the women who love him without a fight.

As a villain for hire I followed those rules, facing down heroes in scripted fights to make them look good for the press and brand deals. Sure, losing every time was a pain, but the money was good. Well, decent. And it kept real heroes off my back. Well, usually.

It wasn't easy being the local slayer. Especially these days, when dragons owned the banks, vampires were peddling health insurance, and demons ran the strip clubs. Still, I'm not exactly hurting for work. Because no sooner do I finish putting down a wannabe necromancer than I get home to find a woman on my porch with her body tattooed in mystic runes, clutching an eldritch cube, and with a hell of a tale to tell. To make matters worse, there's a cult after her, a wolf-girl biker wants a piece of me (in more ways than one), and the new department store is messing with the time space continuum.

Arthur Cain was a hero to his city, the most accomplished and respected of the firefighters in his entire district. But when a call comes in from the so-called "Halfbreed Heights", the monsterfolk part of the city, Arthur's life gets flip-turned upside down. Though he saved the life of a matronly lamia that day, he was also partially crippled and forced into early retirement. Now unable to fit the image of her personal superman, Arthur's wife divorces him and leaves him to move into a cheaper home in the same monsterfolk slum that caused his current situation.

Histoire13
The local wolffolk mafia longs for their glory days, and their alluring don, Alessia Lionetti, wants a powerful enforcer to bring them back. That's Vince. This is his big break from his days as a hired thug. Working for the mafia has a short life expectancy, though. Especially in a world where the masquerade shattered long ago. Demons run banks, birdfolk ferry people across town, and the police possess crack teams of sorcerers to keep the peace. Bad news for Vince and his dreams of mafia wealth.

Poursuivre la série
The book itself has a pretty simple plot and largely likeable characters. Our main character is a remarkably well adjusted mad scientist who's been disowned and suddenly finds himself inheriting a castle and its gremlins from distant relatives - and finds himself in the crosshairs of an industrialist rail baron who wants to seize control of the valley. On the way, he gets involved with two women, with others waiting to swoop in. And all of it with a ton of larger-than-life characters, all eccentric and fun.
My main problem with the book is simple: there's no real conflict. Nothing is ever very hard for the main character. He's simply better than the several enemies he makes in the book, and so is his science. It makes the whole thing feel a little hollow. Do I regret buying the book? No - anything by Jay Aury is going to be good, and this one was a ton of fun. But it's unlikely to be the kind of book I come back to again and again.
A fun, silly adventure in mad science
