An immediate best seller when it was first published in 1726, Gulliver’s Travels has remained a favourite ever since. It was an attack on the politics and society of Swift’s day, but it is also a polemical, inventive, surreal, vitriolic, and wonderfully imaginative masterpiece, whose powerful satire continues to strike home.

Public Domain (P)2010 Naxos AudiobooksAs for the text, it's a very good book. Swift is a genius, the pictures he paints are clear and command the imagination, and the overall experience is unique. He really does manage to give a new view of humanity and society simply by way of a few absorbing thought experiments. I did not have a clear and consistent sense of the attitudes of the main character, I did find that his repugnance for the smell of humans upon return home was a little overblown and inconsistent, and there are sections where the story drags a little. For these reasons I gave it only 4 out of 5 stars, but overall it's a great listen and a classic for good reason.
