Histoire
The defining experience of Chinua Achebe's life was the Nigerian civil war, also known as the Biafran War, of 1967-1970. The conflict was infamous for its savage impact on the Biafran people, Chinua Achebe's people, many of whom were starved to death after the Nigerian government blockaded their borders. Immediately after, Achebe took refuge in an academic post in the United States, and for more than 40 years he has maintained a considered silence on the events of those terrible years. Now, decades in the making, comes a towering reckoning with one of modern Africa's most fateful events.

Description
A haunting story of love and war from the best-selling author of Americanah and We Should All Be Feminists.
With effortless grace, celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie illuminates a seminal moment in modern African history: Biafra’s impassioned struggle to establish an independent republic in southeastern Nigeria during the late 1960s. We experience this tumultuous decade alongside five unforgettable characters: Ugwu, a 13-year-old houseboy who works for Odenigbo, a university professor full of revolutionary zeal; Olanna, the professor’s beautiful young mistress who has abandoned her life in Lagos for a dusty town and her lover’s charm; and Richard, a shy young Englishman infatuated with Olanna’s willful twin sister Kainene. Half of a Yellow Sun is a tremendously evocative novel of the promise, hope, and disappointment of the Biafran war.

Great narrative
I urge everyone to read this book. Very interesting, I got trapped in it until I finished the entire book. Thank you Ngozi for writing this, I had no idea how the war happened but now I know.

Devastating and fascinating retelling of Biafra
I would highly recommend this book. Zanaib Jah does an amazing job with the narration, so much so that I may say it's the best I've seen from Audible. The book itself keeps a lively pace, and is filled with moments of triumph and heartbreak. For those that knew almost nothing of the conflict (myself included) this novel provides a great look into what life would have been like during a Civil War.

Incredible story and amazing narration
I love Adichie's writing - it is very powerful, descriptive and creates very real atmospheres. I knew very little about Biafra when I began, and after reading (listening) to the book I ended up reading more on the history of the Biafran movement and present day struggles.
Zainab Jah's narration is incredible! She is on my list of new favourite narrators and hope she records more.

Beautiful book
I didn't know anything about Nigeria's civil war and this book taught me so much, the emotions are so raw and deep . The characters point of view make it so interesting and engaging. It's beautifully written from beginning to end and even if you know how everything ends, is an amazing ride.

Poorly written
I had to double check when the book was written as I thought it must be the 70's or 80's. The writing is dull, predictable, and full of stereotypes. I really tried but couldn't get past the second chapter. There's also a lot of cheesy and unnecessary bits about sex and sexual desire that seem really out of place.
