Great book, large setting akin to S. King... without all the weird sex

I did not like the narrator at first, but I really do now, I appreciate the size and complexity of this story, the author maintains good balance between the primary story line and the set up for the next book, which starts early, the character development is great, the line between good guy and bad guy is realistic...good, good book.

I initially struggled with the narrator’s voice and tempo during, well, the narration, but, that was easy to get over because he performs the dialogue masterfully. Every character has it’s own voice and often accent, which in many cases, the narrator seems to add for his own amusement and that works for me, it bolsters the sense of believability in the world Ron Ripley is unfolding.

I really like this idea of autonomous haunted items, the differing levels of danger associated with each and the sub culture that surrounds them. The introduction of supporting characters, both human and otherwise, is well paced, they are interesting and add flavour, again, well balanced. Character development is so well done and also well paced, people and ghosts are believable, relationships feel natural, there is no artificial tension for tensions sake. I get the distinct impression that the author has, in fact, lived with and around other humans, then drew upon said experience to creat believable human interactions.

We are allowed a brief look at the antagonist’s background which helps clarify his motivation and the result is a bad guy one could cheer for, if he was not such an @$$hole, that is. It is cool that the bad guy has more going on in his life than, you know... bad guy stuff. By contrast, the protagonist’s background is largely unknown, yet, the story does not suffer as a result. His motivation and purpose are established early, he is in flux, growing into a roll in a world, previously, unknown to him, his past is simply less important than his present.

This is starting to get out of hand, I put more effort into these reviews than I did my high school English essays. I often asked my English instructors when l would ever need to write an essay in the, so called, real world, they could never satisfactorily answer me, now I know...reviewing books on Audible, who knew? If you made it this far, you will definitely get used to the narrator. Enjoy the the book.

I loved it! I definitely recommend this book! if you like getting chills while reading a book, this is the book for you!!
