Description

On April Fourth, 1945, United States Army units from the 89th Infantry Division and the Fourth Armored Division seized Ohrdruf, the first of many Nazi concentration camps to be liberated in Germany. In the weeks that followed, as more camps were discovered, thousands of soldiers came face to face with the monstrous reality of Hitler's Germany.

These men discovered the very depths of human-imposed cruelty and depravity: railroad cars stacked with emaciated, lifeless bodies; ovens full of incinerated human remains; warehouses filled with stolen shoes, clothes, luggage, and even eyeglasses; prison yards littered with implements of torture and dead bodies; and - perhaps most disturbing of all - the half-dead survivors of the camps. For the American soldiers of all ranks who witnessed such powerful evidence of Nazi crimes, the experience was life altering. Almost all were haunted for the rest of their lives by what they had seen, horrified that humans from ostensibly civilized societies were capable of such crimes.

Military historian John C. McManus sheds new light on this often-overlooked aspect of the Holocaust. Drawing on a rich blend of archival sources and thousands of firsthand accounts - including unit journals, interviews, oral histories, memoirs, diaries, letters, and published recollections - Hell before Their Very Eyes focuses on the experiences of the soldiers who liberated Ohrdruf, Buchenwald, and Dachau and their determination to bear witness to this horrific history.

Uncovering Of Actual EVIL

War historian John C. McManus shifts from his admirable goal of documenting/elucidating the military strategies & tactics of WWII (spotlighting on-the-ground experiences) to explore the most horrifying Crime Against Humanity in history: The Holocaust.
It is amazing to me that the Allies consistently fought with the ferocity & dedication described in McManus's other books [the revelation of unimaginable cruelty (and what they were *really* fighting against) didn't occur until the spring of the final year of a 6-year conflict].

"My country called and I went. Only after seeing Dachau did I realize what we were doing"

My respect for the men who fought that War is boundless.

McManus uses punctiliously-compiled and well-written testimonials (authenticating mind's-eye vivid descriptions) to accomplish the dual goals of documenting the horrific reality of the revelations and challenging Holocaust Deniers.
Admittedly, McManus doesn't do a very good job of drawing conclusions (the book is essentially a compilation of anecdotes) - but the visceral reaction it prompts alone is thought-provoking.

Less fortunately, reader Joe Barrett's performance is professional but unspectacular on this project. Blackstone Audio Inc provides commendable technical support - and Barrett's diction, timbre, and pacing are typically spot-on - but his tone is relatively uninterested for some reason.. the book sounds as if Barrett is simply reading a book sitting open on a table in front of him.

Altogether, the weightiness of the topic by itself makes this 8/10 star audiobook a worthwhile listen. McManus's effort is an eye-opening memoir from the unique POV of the liberating witnesses - rather than the much more common remembrances of survivors that Holocaust scholars rely on.
Despite lacklustre reading, even were Audible to ask for a Credit, it would be reasonable to spend it..
If you can get 'Hell Before Their Very Eyes' as a 'Plus' selection, Do Not Hesitate.

[Incidentally: the discussion of "reprisal killings" - US soldiers & freed prisoners murdering disarmed German guards - underlines the jawdropping madness of this tragedy]

Hell Before Their Very Eyes

We should NEVER forget. So hard to comprehend human cruelty, but so blessed to hear and see such compassion.
