In 2014, Shane Bauer was hired for nine dollars an hour to work as an entry-level prison guard at a private prison in Winnfield, Louisiana. An award-winning investigative journalist, he used his real name. Four months later, his employment came to an abrupt end. But he had seen enough and wrote an exposé about his experiences that won a National Magazine Award. In American Prison, Bauer weaves a much deeper reckoning with his experiences together with a thoroughly researched history of for-profit prisons in America from their origins in the decades before the Civil War.

Description
In 2010, the al Rabeeah family left their home in Iraq in hope of a safer life. They moved to Homs, in Syria - just before the Syrian civil war broke out.
Abu Bakr, one of eight children, was 10 years old when the violence began on the streets around him: car bombings, attacks on his mosque and school, firebombs late at night. Homes tells of the strange juxtapositions of growing up in a war zone: horrific, unimaginable events punctuated by normalcy - soccer, cousins, video games, friends.
Homes is the remarkable true story of how a young boy emerged from a war zone - and found safety in Canada - with a passion for sharing his story and telling the world what is truly happening in Syria. As told to her by Abu Bakr al Rabeeah, writer Winnie Yeung has crafted a heartbreaking, hopeful, and urgently necessary book that provides a window into understanding Syria.

An absolutely amazing book.
I learned so much not only about life in a war torn world but about the Muslim faith. This young man's journey is fascinating and eye opening. His father is a tower of strength. You must read or listen to this book. It will change your world view

This Book Seizes Your Heart
I was captivated by the immediacy of Abu Bakr's description of his 'worlds'. This book is not only about life in a war torn country and the experience of immigrating to Canada but it illustrates the adaptability of human nature, the bonds of family and friends, the courage and fear of living in a place devastated by war, and the adaptability to make wherever home is, normal. This is evidenced by Abu Bakr's 'matter of fact' renditions of horrific events without any drama. The descriptions of how the family and friends interact, illustrates how much everyone has in common in spite of vast differences in circumstances. And above all, Abu Bakr's insight engenders a deep compassion and respect for those who have left their homes and friends and family to find refuge here. Winnie Yeung's commitment and talents helped Abu Bakr make this book a reality. The narration was perfect as well. I highly recommend this title.

An Eyeopener
I listened to this in almost one “sitting”. What an education. We in the first world, as a rule, have little concept of the story behind the news. This book helps to mitigate that. Hats off to Abu Bakr family and friends.

we are more alike than we are different...
Abu Bakr's young voice and the recency of the events give a glimpse into another world we usually only hear about in the news, where it's easier to forget the individuals behind the stories.

My immigrant family lived in the Highlands area
I found this novel firstly informative. My father was part of a large Polish immigrant family so I can relate to the sense of loneliness as my relatives spoke of their early years. But they were Christians with one family from the same region in Poland living close by.However, I had no idea of how Muslim immigrant families from areas of war zones adjusted to a Canadian city in December/January. Therefore the initial chapters were most helpful. I could
then begin to comprehend the effect that migration had on various member of the family. We lived in the Highlands area of Edmonton and my older sister attended the same high school as did the main character Abu Bakr so I know the area well. Thank you all for telling your story.I learned a great deal and wish you well

Great story of what we Canadians know nothing about. I'm glad we are so open minded in Canada. I'm grateful for his sharing of his story.
