In this Hugo-nominated novel, an alien walks into a museum and asks if he can see a paleontologist. But the arachnid ET hasn't come aboard a rowboat with the Pope and Stephen Hawking (although His Holiness does request an audience later). Landing at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the spacefarer, Hollus, asks to compare notes on mass extinctions with resident dino-scientist Thomas Jericho.

Caitlin Decter is young, pretty, feisty, a genius at math - and blind. Still, she can surf the net with the best of them, following its complex paths clearly in her mind. But Caitlin's brain long ago co-opted her primary visual cortex to help her navigate online. So when she receives an implant to restore her sight, instead of seeing reality, the landscape of the World Wide Web explodes into her consciousness, spreading out all around her in a riot of colors and shapes.

This is the story of Pierre Tradivel, a scientist, and his complex battle against deadly illness, and ex-Nazi war criminal still hiding in the U.S., a crooked insurance company, and a plot to make Pierre and his wife the victims of a bizarre genetic experiment. Frameshift is hard science fiction at its best, full of complications and neat surprises.

Fascinating
A good story that gives the reader much to think about. Pity it was published in 2002 because it would have been even better if it had been able to incorporate the knowledge of Neanderthals we have accumulated since then. The narrator is good but does have a problem with pronunciation.

Complex parallel world
I understand they want to sell more books, but I can't think WHY the alternative Earth, upon seeing the waste that humans made of our world, wouldn't throw away the key that linked the two worlds!
Backstory - there is a link created between two Earths - one where Homo sapiens became the dominant primate, and one where the Neandertals kept that position. Theirs is portrayed as a much more idyllic world. One of their members gets trapped on the Homo sapiens side, and all the predictable things happen - love interest included.

A good listen
If you like anthropology at all you would probably enjoy this book.
The narrator leaves a lot to be desired though. He does not do women's voices very well. I swore one of the doctors was Indian by the accent he was doing until the doctor said he was African American.
Takes place in Ontario, Canada.

Good initial hook, middling middlings. 🤔 No Tim bit for you.
Robert Sawyer has a gift for tales no doubt. This trilogy appears to get bogged down in characters sequestered in suburbia Sudbury and flounced up murder trials. Plots devices sure but the storyline languishes.
The cool Sci fi components run out after the initial third and lapses into a commonplace narrative.
The portrayal of RCMP and French Canadians, and even Tim Hortons is poorly done. Lip service to Canadian icons without the gravitas to make these important items relatable. Stuart McLeans’ portayals celebrate Canadians in their native habitat. Not so much here. I’d argue that this is an important part of the story that missed being told well. Perhaps this is a Canadian “lite” novel meant for American readers.
After 28 chapters I’m hoping that Sawyer pulls this out of the fire.

Fun read that makes you think
I enjoyed this Canadian award-winning romp. It was very scientific with a warm heart. One of the best theories for multiple worlds.

Interesting
I read the book maybe 15 years ago and I thought it was awesome; however, i purchased the audiobook and listening to it, the story now it seems a bit outdated… with concepts that do not relate to 2023… the narrator did a good job but I was not sure about the French accent he tried to emulate and I don’t think that the Jamaican accent worked either… just my opinion…

Disappointing
Not a bad story
But could do without the authors anti Ontario Conservative party opinions being randomly thrown into the story.
