“I want to believe, I want to have hope, but....” Pastor and best-selling author Craig Groeschel hears these words often and has asked them himself. We want to know God, feel his presence, and trust that he hears our prayers, but in the midst of great pain, we may wonder if he really cares about us. Even when we have both hope and hurt, sometimes it’s the hurt that shouts the loudest. Can God be good when life is not?

In Hope in the Dark, Groeschel explores the story of the father who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus, saying, “I believe! Help my unbelief!” In the man’s sincere plea, Jesus heard the tension in the man’s battle-scarred heart. He healed not only the boy but the father, too, driving out the hopelessness that had overtaken him. He can do the same for us today.

As Groeschel shares his pain surrounding the current health challenges of his daughter, he acknowledges the questions we may ask in our own deepest pain: “Where was God when I was being abused?” “Why was my child born with a disability?” “Why did the cancer come back?” “Why are all my friends married and I’m alone?” He invites us to wrestle with such questions as we ask God to honor our faith and heal our unbelief.

In the middle of your profound pain, you long for authentic words of understanding and hope. You long to know that even in overwhelming reality, you can still believe that God is good. Rediscover a faith in the character, power, and presence of God. Even in the questions. Even now.

Just what I needed in a difficult season

my thanks to the ultimate author of my life who brought this book into my life just when I needed it most it has definitely given me hope in the dark that I will again see the Light of God’s love shining in my life and it has reminded me that just because I cannot see the light of God right now does not mean that it is not there if I but open my eyes I will be able to see abundant evidence of his love all around me Thank you God and thank you Craig Groschel for allowing God to use you to reach me and countless others may I one day soon be as willing and brave as you

An Incredible Must Read! A Very Insightful Picture Regarding Pain and the Presence of God

This is the first time anyone has put into words all of the feelings of my life for these past nine years. I am awestruck. After: debilitating migraines: my teen daughter being diagnosed with leukemia: then my daughter’s diagnosis with necrosis in every major bone of her extremities: after realizing that she now has to spend much of her life in a wheelchair: her chronic pain: my chronic pain: trying to financially pay for all of the medical care: wondering if we’ll ever recover financially and emotionally: with our children now starting to enter college with debt, which I am incredibly against, and it wasn’t the plan: knowing that only God can be our provider: watching Him work: seeing His faithfulness: knowing that healing is not always the plan: trying to help other Christians realize that God has spoken and the pain, at least for now is going to stay: my daughter studying to be a doctor even though her brain doesn’t work as quickly as it used to, she hurts, she works so hard and sometimes it’s through tears, all of this and more. God remains faithful through the circumstances. Everyone should read this book. Christians who want to minister to those who are hurting, in particular need to read the book. People, Christians or not, looking for hope need to read the book. God really gave some amazing insight to our world and possibly to yours through this book. Don’t be fake, wrestle, but embrace. Remember what God’s done in the past. I am so glad these words have been written to help not only my family, but all of those who don’t understand why God would allow such pain without relief.

Hope filled!

So many times we lose hope and wonder where God is in all that is going on. Craig compassionately communicates that we can hope in God regardless of what happens. But he doesn't say that flippantly but as one who has and is living through difficult times. The reader also expresses that very well in the telling of this hopeful book.

Help my unbelief.....

what an interesting story the value of the story comes from the perspective of the authors impending struggle in his own family and to be able to read a story like this while enduring such a struggle adds a depth that cannot be manufactured...

so many times through the reading of this book I let my mouth say

"that's easy for you to say"

and by God's grace nobody was around to hear my stupidity as I hung my head in shame realizing it was not easy to say it's not even easy to pretend to say it's much harder to live....

The take away from this book for me is not only is God okay with your doubts your frustrations your anger what do you expect to hear it as well...

the struggle in the church for the congregants is classic Christianity forbids questioning God because an organized structured religion that also means questioning Spiritual Authority....

many many of us have read where David expressed his struggles and his doubts we know Moses struggled and doubted we know all these stories about the struggles in the doubts but we know them as isolated Standalone moments so when the question gets asked who in this room is ever doubted God when it's written to the people in scripture more hands are raised than anybody would perceive until they've read this book...

hit my walk I have watched many men in Spiritual Authority over congregations Lives experience the same reality as everybody else in the church there needs to be a stronger message that the man behind the pulpit is no different than the man in front of the pulpit although we should consider them to be at a higher level of whatever it is we should also understand that their struggles are potentially worse than ours because of the expectations of the ones that they should rely on...

Awesome books and I hope your daughter is doing better...

Amazing read for anyone struggling with hope!

Brings so much to light and to the forefront of struggling with faith. Seeing the struggle clearly and understanding everyone gets there is so important, and from there how to move through the dark towards hope again
