Description

The first novel in the Iron Druid Chronicles - introducing a cool, new, funny urban fantasy hero

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old - when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.

Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power - plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish - to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.

Don’t miss any of Kevin Hearne’s phenomenal Iron Druid Chronicles novels:

Enjoyable, but predictable target audience.

The story was quite enjoyable, an easy romp through a complicated world of magic. Especially the dog of course.

The writing itself was regrettably mired several decades in the past - when it was thought sci-fi or fantasy was read only by adolescent boys. All the women in the book are beautiful, brimming with lust, and sexually available to the protagonist.

That’s just lazy writing and the story suffers because of it.

Wonderful!

A great story, with fun to love characters, plenty of suspense, humor and action, a fantastic reader, and a wee bit of romance. Many fun quotes as well! #Audible1 is great!

Liked it. Wish I'd loved it.

First, a few points of comparison with Dresden Files. I've only read the first Dresden book and now only the first Iron Druid book, but I think I like this series better. The first-person voice was a tad less cliche. There's only so much I can take of "noir", hard-boiled detective first-person narration. It gets so tiring and there's no relief from it. And although I'm a fan of James Marsters' work as Spike in Buffy, I was not a fan of his narration in the Dresden audio books.

The Iron Druid is a bit lighter in its delivery and the voice is less tiresome. As a work of fantasy and world building it wasn't bad. I was grateful that the voice was direct and engaging. Lore and geography didn't come at the expense of character and a moving plot that is so often the case in classic high-fantasy.

I love Luke Daniels' narration. He actually brought me to this series as I loved his work on "Off To Be The Wizard".

However.... now that I write and reflect there were a few things that bothered me quite a bit about this book. The delivery overall is still somewhat cliche. No hard-boiled detective, but how about Irish stereotypes... too many characters have red hair! Irish whiskey! The English!

The sexual tension was hackneyed and ham-fisted. And every female character was one-dimensional. Oh, and I could certainly do without the Harlequin Romance covers. Thank goodness I don't own a physical copy of this book.

The reliance on pop-culture references threw me out of the story every time they were used to describe someone or evoke humor. Don't tell me your character's demeanor is like Harrison Ford. Don't try to endear me to your talking dog by having him impersonate Eric Cartman from South Park. Puh-leeze! It's forced. It's cheap and it's amateur i.m.h.o. And speaking of cheap, potty humor does not endear me to your talking dog either. I know he's a "dog", but I cannot help but think Oberon's constantly offering to "sniff asses" is more about Hearne trying to be funny as if he's writing to a 10-year-old audience. Again, cheap. That dog might be a deal-breaker for me and this series. But clearly there are enough people (10-year-olds?) in Hearne's fan-base that have validated these choices because I see the damn dog eventually gets his own series!!

As for the Iron Druid series... I've never been entirely sold by the retort "Just wait! It gets awesome by book three!" *sigh* Yeah, maybe...

Exciting

Nothing beats finding a new (to me) author with a series just waiting to enjoy. This book was entertaining. The narrator does a fabulous job with the numerous characters. I can't wait to listen to the next book.

Riveting

Fantastic modern fantasy, this story succeeds where many others fail. Atticus is believably badass without being untouchable, and Oberon is an adorable comic relief. Atticus doesn't feel like a Gary Stu despite being a powerful, ancient magical creature. I wish there was better development of female characters, and that they weren't all beautiful and perfect looking, but it certainly beats other authors' descriptions of "body like a runway model" or the size of breasts.
My main complaint is the narrator's heavy American accent and his awful attempts at foreign accents and Celtic words, making the protagonist and other characters sound like either psychotic leprechauns, or thick tongued idiots who can't speak their own native language.

Good series thru book 6

After book 6 this series takes a serious nosedive, I can’t say much because of spoilers but what I can say is book 7 and beyond turn into an exercise in frustration, there is a certain side character that really kills it when the story is told from their perspective and the story just becomes so uninteresting. Fair warning, I stopped at book 8 and honestly could care less how this story ends, it just gets so bad, I don’t know what the author was thinking.

Starting point

Excellent starting point to begin an audiobook collection. I've switched to audible for audio books and find myself re-collecting the Iron Druid Chronicles. #Audible1
