Description
A young lady's tarnished reputation might cost her everything in this first book in the Disreputable Debutantes series.
Shy, bookish Sophie Brightwell is expected to make an advantageous match to improve her family's fortunes. However, Sophie's plans to make a spectacular debut go horribly awry when she and her three closest friends are expelled from a young ladies' academy for unbecoming conduct. Since the ton will be sure to close their doors on these disgraced debutantes, they determine that unconventional means need to be employed in the husband-hunting market. Rakehells - the beau monde's wickedest members - might be the only men willing to overlook a young lady's besmirched reputation.
But how does one catch a rake?
Nate Hastings, the devil-may-care Viscount Malverne, is the older brother of Sophie's best friend, fellow disgraced debutante Lady Charlotte. When a terribly foxed Nate accidentally compromises Sophie, Charlotte strikes a wicked bargain: in order to avoid a scandal and the parson's mousetrap, Nate must help Sophie snare a husband. But as Nate fulfills his obligation and begins to instruct the lovely Sophie in the art of luring rakes, he soon finds himself battling his own fierce attraction to her.

A wonderful find
So glad I tried this book and author! I’ve read all the books from my favourite author and was at a loss at what to read next. Having gone through many many books that just didn’t fit the bill- I have found this one and can’t wait to go off to book two! Sizzle and spice with a little bit of a villain. 🦹 just perfect

Loved it!
I enjoyed listening to this story, the audio is done extremely well, fully capturing emotion and sentiment. I simply love Amy Rose Bennett’s voice! She tells a story that captures you and sucks you in. Nate is a hero filled with anguish and brooding angst, utterly refusing to fall in love and equally blind when it does in fact happen. Sophie is an eternal optimist, ever true to her own heart. The pain of denial was so strong I literally felt it to the bone. I loved the back story of the Disreputable Debutantes, disgraced when caught with naught literature, cigars and alcohol… a typical boarding school scandal that marks each of the girls and sets the tone for this series. It is fun and daring and a little wicked, which is a fabulous start if to ask me. Can’t wait to read more!

It’s a story we have all read before but I really liked the authors take on it
Girl falls in love with her best friends brother & the guy takes forever to realize his true feelings. It’s a story that’s been told a million times but the author did a good job with the characters, unlike other books this lead female character actually did what she wanted and wasn’t ashamed & the lead male had an interesting backstory. I found myself really enjoying this classic love story

Not very wicked; rather ordinary and slow
Both the writing and narration were tame. Nothing horrible for a free and easy regency listen, but I would have regretted paying for this. This isn’t as clean as Julia Quinn regency, but it also isn’t as fun, saucy, or sexy as Tessa Dare (my favorite for “modern” regency romance, with Duchess Deal or Wallflower Wager combining great writing and narration).
The aching balls to actual nooky ratio was horribly off for me. I wonder what the word count for “ache” is... as disreputable rake Nate spends forever thinking / aching about innocent Sophie, and Sophie wonders at his snug breeches... a lot. Actual naughty bits are few and far between: groping at 6.5 hrs in, handjobs and grinding around 8.5 hrs, and the deal closes at the 10 hr mark, just minutes before the end. A personal pet peeve of mine: for the sparse nooky and tame story, there was way too much use of the word “quim.” Blech. And at least one “cunny.” Double blech. I won’t be moving on to any other books by this author.

Childish
While there are significantly worse narrators, Sienna Frances really read the characters as if they were 16 years old not in their twenties. This compiled with the writer's text, which had the H and h speaking slightly melodramatically (in a teenage angsty sort of way), made what might have been an okay read almost intolerable.

I couldn’t tell if this story was any good or not because the narrator made me crazy! After 5 chapters, I gave up!

No
Flimsy, choppy plot. Bad language. And sexual content pushed and needless. Tried to make main character innocent and promiscuous. It did not make for a true character

Meh
I feel like this is what happens when you try to mix modern thought with history. It’s some kind of lame mix of guys talking to one another about ‘prophylactic sheaths’ and men sleeping with their bride-to-be (no ‘prophylactic sheath’ in sight) right along side rides in Hyde Park and fancy gowns. It’s not historical fiction, it’s fantasy. The reason men and women tried to wait until the wedding? Contrary to what you read in books like these about French letters, they were imperfect and not widely available. If you really loved your intended, you didn’t bed her until after the wedding when she’d have the protection of your name. Life was hard for women then but extremely hard for unmarried pregnant women. What if you got her pregnant and something happened to you before the wedding? It wasn’t unheard of. In some cases marriage was the greatest power move you could make as a woman. Okay, enough ranting about that.
If this was a Heyer, about 2/3 through it would’ve gone like this: Lord B accosts S and when refused, hurries home to press her stepfather for her hand in marriage. In the meantime Lord C is courting S in earnest. After obtaining the stepfather’s compliance, Lord B hurried back to London to gloat over S. When she hears she will be summoned home to marry Lord B, S flees to Lord C and begs him to elope. Lord C complies. When Lord B realizes, he heads to tell all to Lord M. Lord M, with murder in his eyes pursues the couple to a posting inn where he confronts Lord C with pistols cocked. S hides and listens as Lord C goads Lord M into confessing his love. She then rushes out to embrace him and Lord C stands aside gracefully and even stays to head off the belated Lord B while Lord M and S elope to Scotland.
That would’ve been fun. Instead we have a man who kinda-sorta loves but mostly lusts after the heroine.
Lastly, the narrator is okay but she says claret weird. Like chalet. Chalet uses the French pronunciation, claret doesn’t. Not a big deal in anyone else but it’s a narrator’s job to know how words are pronounced.
Okay, I’m done. Read at your own risk.

This was a great find!
I loved the overall story. It wasn't to angst or sexy. If you enjoy a smooth reading experience this book will satisfy that. Sophie was a good heroine and Nate was cool. I started off a little angry at the plot but it worked itself out. You won't be disappointed!!

don't listen to this one
This was a DNF, reading aloud is hard and I can easily forgive a few mistakes but this narrator has obviously never even watched a BBC show. The second she said "piano fort" I googled how to review an audible book to help me remember not to listen to anything read by her. Baby voices and no concept of pronunciation.

chaste and steamy at the same time
This book started out a bit slow for me but it soon picked up the pace. I found myself becoming more and more engrossed in the story. I loved Nate and Sophie as a couple. Nate was the tortured soul in denial of his true feelings for Sophie. Sophie was the chaste and demure debutante with a desire to explore and experience life. This book shows that dealing with scandal isn't hard at all especially when there really isn't any scandal but only the misguided morals of the populace. I loved that Sophie refused to be used as a bargaining chip by her parents to erase a debt. The book was really entertaining and I liked all the sub-characters. Looking forward to reading about the other Ladies in the scandalous quartet of debutants.
