Description

Brighton Longfield is kinda bad at life. She's divorced, childless, and she just got fired...again.

With dwindling savings and few prospects, she packs her possessions into a U-Haul and sets out for the little town of Coventry, where she inherited a dilapidated old house from her Great Aunt "Mad" Maude Tuttlesmith.

Coventry is supposed to be a stop in the road for Brighton. The plan is to fix up the house, sell it, and then figure out what to do with her life. You know what they say about the best-laid plans....

Coventry isn't your typical small town. At one time, it was home to two powerful families of witches. But, the Skeenbauer and Tuttlesmith families couldn't put their differences aside, and eventually, the feuding drove the Tuttlesmith witches out of town.

The matriarch of the Skeenbauer family isn't pleased to have a descendant of the Tuttlesmith witches return. The thing is, the Tuttlesmiths stopped practicing magic when they left Coventry, and Brighton has no idea she's a witch. She's about to get a big surprise.

Written by someone with no life experience.

I think this book was written by someone who has little life experience or no willingness to do research. Without revealing any significant plot points, let me point out a few indicators to support my hypothesis:

1) GPS depend on satellites not magnetism. 2) B&B means bed and BREAKFAST, not dinner. 3) A small town that has no tourists nor even one motel could never support an artisan chocolate shop. 4) A 75$ B&B room is not "expensive", its a dump and she would do better to sleep in her car. 5) the protagonist showed up at an abandonned house, site unseen, with all her possessions, no tools nor house repair knowledge and ZERO capital, assuming she would live there and "fix it up" by herself somehow. 6) The local sherrif, in uniform, over several chapters variously criticques the protaganists' looks, touches her hair uninvited, and threatens to arrest her. Later he is dismissive of her evidence of a prowler, and, incredibly creepily, shows up at her door at the crack of dawn in a police vehicle, steps into her personal space, then 2 inches from her lips "asks" to kiss her? Dude is a stalker in waiting and should be reported for sexual harassment and fired. Its not romantic AT ALL. That is an abuse of authority.
6) Immediatly after that creepy morning visit, the protagonist turns around and goes back into the house where the "sweet guy" who was sleeping on her living room floor wakes up and she proceeds to forget how turned on she was by the "most eligible bachelor" sherrif. Maybe that whiplash behavior was because of her prior gaslighting by her ex husband? Maybe?

The author's writing style was fine, no excssive use of said. Dialog ok too. But it reads like a first outing by a GenZ who has missed all the usual adulting milestones.
