Description
In Search Of Black History with Bonnie Greer brings you face-to-face with the people you never knew existed. People whose stories tell us a different tale about who we all are. From the earliest glimmerings of modern humanity, up to the present day, Bonnie Greer uncovers the lives of people of African descent that don’t fit with the accepted history of Western Civilisation we’ve traditionally been taught. From saints, to philosophers, to warrior women and king’s heralds - these people’s lives have been lost, hidden and distorted down the centuries. We’ve lost the full richness and complexity of our shared histories - it’s time to fill in the gaps.
In this eight part series, playwright and former Trustee of the British Museum, Bonnie Greer, travels with us through the ages, meeting the academics and experts who are uncovering these stories at the cutting edge of historical research, and she brings their subjects’ lives to life - with an imaginative re-telling of their stories.

listen to this.
Seriously, right now stop reading this post and just download and listen to the podcast. There is so much here that I wish had been included in other histories...times I stopped and relistened to parts as I wondered why this was not part of narratives I knew.
You will be introduced to people who will find a home in your heart and your brain and make you look both at the stories you know and objects you see in a new light.
The timeline; the interviews; all of it is expertly put together in a way which in truth refreshes and refocused me on the long fight for inclusion of more voices in dominate culture and conversation.

Very interesting
Having never read any “black history” before, and having detested the mandatory history classes, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The series turned out to be both informative and fascinating.
Some subjects I was aware of, but knew very little about. Others were completely new to me.
Although I would like to know more about some of the people whose stories were described, I realize that in some cases there simply aren’t many records and in others the research is ongoing. I’ll keep an eager eye on the archaeology magazines for studies on the ancestry of mediaeval and early modern Europeans and for the results of digs in Africa.

Every person should listen to this!
I was left wanting more... But not because it was lacking in any way. It is wonderfully eye opening and awe inspiring! It motivated me to research more after each and every episode.

From a white woman - thank you!
My quest for understanding and equality started, when i came to Canada from life behind the russian iron curtain in my home country Poland. I never have seen any colored person prior to that. Life in communism was nothing short of slavery too in some respect, but i did grow up in an environment that at least, for most part, believed in equality. My first new year, my parents rented out what should have been a girly romance movie for me, while they went to church. To my horror, nothing prepared me for.. Even remote understanding of slavery. My patents rented Gone with the Wind for me. My brain registered very little of the romance... But i watched in horror what humans can do to each other.
Since that fateful new year of 1989, i have not stopped at trying to fully understand. In that quest, i have found this audio book. Thank you, thank you thank you!
What a mind!
This has been by far, one of the best works i have come to this date on the subject of race, racism, equality.
Keep on writing.. I'll keep on listening! ❤️

Our history that needs to be retold and shared
The narrator not only has a wonderful voice to listen to but introduces each specialist and subject with timing that is easy to follow, and a story line with excellent cohesion. I am
Impatient to hear the missing voices of the African scientists. There is so much biased history and science, I look forward to the impact of exposing our humans evolution.

Cultural perspectives revisited. Thank you!
Most of us could use a refresher of how historians often tell the story according to what they think will sell to the audience dictating the outcome.
I truly appreciate the reminders of events not trendy because they muddy our history books.
