I loved the story. The illumination of Singapore history, cultural norms, displacement identity - all of it blends extremely well, Jaswal’s description of mental illness, without trying to recreate it on paper, is probably one of the most accurate I’ve read.

But here’s the bad part. The narrator is awful. His reading is staccato and unnatural. Even worse is the editing - there is no space between one chapter and the next so it literally sounds like the chapter switches mid-sentence. Since the perspective switches with each chapter, and the decade with each part this makes it very confusing. I had to keep putting the sleep timer on to “end of chapter” just so there would be an enforced break between chapters and I would know the POV had moved to another person.

This is such a wonderful book but it really needs to be re-recorded.
