THE INSTANT #1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER Shortlisted for the British Book Awards 2025 • Shortlisted for the An Post Irish Book Awards Novel of the Year Foyles Book of the Year • Best Book of the Year: The New Yorker • The New York Times • The Globe and Mail • TIME • The Winnipeg Free Press • The Guardian • The Independent • NPR • Dazed • VOX • People • Kirkus Reviews • Publishers Weekly • An exquisitely moving story about grief, love and family, from the global phenomenon Sally Rooney.

Aside from the fact that they are brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek seem to have little in common.

Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties – successful, competent and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women – his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke.

Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret, an older woman emerging from her own turbulent past, and their lives become rapidly and intensely intertwined.

For two grieving brothers and the people they love, this is a new interlude – a period of desire, despair and possibility – a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.

Editorial Review

Sally Rooney raises her game
We may not be getting bucket hats this time, but a new Sally Rooney novel is still an EVENT. And Intermezzo is much more than a must-have accessory, though you’ll see it everywhere this fall. If you’ve been pining for Sally’s liquid sentences and diamond insights, here they are, this time in a tale of two brothers: Peter, a dashing early-thirtysomething who “goes along the surface of life very smoothly” according to Ivan, younger by a decade, a neurodiverse chess prodigy a bit past his prime – both of them navigating romances while facing the recent death of their father. I’m inhaling the vivid scenes and blasé bombshells – “Plain, unappealing people are by no means exempt from the experience of strong passions,” muses Ivan, for one. This is also a first-time departure from Rooney’s signature narrator, Aoife McMahon. I will always love Aoife, but man, Éanna Hardwicke, who you know as Rob from TV’s Normal People, is the perfect voice for this novel: intelligent, charismatic and (yes!) demurely sexy as only Irish men know how. Well played, all around. — Kat J., Audible Editor

This book feels like a long demonstration of the authors ability to develop characters very, very deeply, all book long.

very deep character development

Loved the family drama very close to life. A bit confusing on the story about the ex girlfriend. At times had to force my attention not sure why, could be because my own mind started to think about my own loss of father...

Deep story

I laughed and I cried. For real. I did both. Excellent book IMO. 15 word minimum. Lol. I f you want people to leave reviews, maybe don’t have minimum word counts.

I loved this book!!

I swear this is the best Sally Rooney novel yet! it was just stunning.

to be honest, I bought the book the day it came out but struggled with the dense written text, thank goodness I splurged on an audible credit as this narrator was superb.

I really savoured this novel.

in this novel. every single character is not truly self aware, so misguided, so misunderstood, so struggling in the world. I truly truly loved this book

powerfully poignant

Liked and disliked every character powerfully during the course of the story which for me both highlights Rooney’s skill and tells us much about the dynamic nature of human relationships. Loved the interplay of both internal monologues and the complex interactions between the five main characters. Nice philosophical and literary references as well as ideas related to neurodivergence and cognitive therapy.

Study in grief

Loved the readers voice.
Powerful messages about love , grief, brotherhood, acceptance and forgiveness.
I would recommend this 10/10

Family love

The reading by Ėanna Hatdwicke is so good, so nuanced and sensitive, that the audio version of this (already multilayered) book has an extra level of insight.

Superb reading by Hardwicke

Sally Rooney is so gifted at developing her characters. And at writing wonderfully realistic dialogue. The narrator is superb.

A Lovely Story

This was a book club selection and was it ever painful to get through. I think I will forever cringe when hearing the words "obviously" and "cool".

Terrible

I was so excited about this book, I love this author, Normal People got me through the beginning of the pandemic, I love conversations with friends also etc….. this book was underdeveloped, the characters were boring, characters we have seen before but better written. It was repetitive, the exploration of grief was superficial at best not delving into any of the actual complexity of real grieving beyond “you aren’t yourself “. The use of chess was just thrown in, without any real substance or research. The second half of the book was completely predictable, with an unsatisfying far too conventional ending. I have read so many identical reviews online for this book suggesting the publisher has done their work with prerelease. This book felt like the work of a much less experienced author, and a marketing team hyping it up .

Utter disappointment
