À propos de cet audio

On July 4, 2022, a shooter climbed onto a rooftop in Highland Park, Illinois, and opened fire on a Fourth of July parade below, killing seven people and wounding dozens more. Prosecutors charged Robert “Bobby” Crimo III with the mass shooting. But this attack was part of something even more insidious. Bobby had created an elaborate game—complete with cryptic videos, a book of numbers, and an eerie online presence—designed to seed a conspiracy theory about the massacre.

Into the Madness is a deep dive into the events leading up to the mass shooting and the story of a woman who became a confidant to Crimo and the final player in his game. Drawing from dozens of interviews and more than 48 hours of recorded calls with Bobby, investigative journalist Trevor Aaronson tells a story that will challenge everything you think you know about mass shootings, conspiracy theories, and the fragile boundary between reality and illusion.

The series explores the rise of nihilistic violence, the role of technology in fostering extremism, and America’s collective descent into conspiracy thinking. Into the Madness will leave you questioning where the truth ends—and the madness begins.

Into the Madness is an Audible Original, produced by Trevor Aaronson and Western Sound.

Warning: This program contains graphic descriptions of violence and death, as well as recordings of a man accused of committing mass murder. Listener discretion is advised.

This Trevor Aaronson documentary explores the cultural phenomena & fringe-y online communities that radicalized 21-year-old Robert "Bobby" Cremo III.. leading to a mass shooting at a 4th of July parade in an affluent Chicago suburb.
Aaronson follows contemplation and an exploration conducted by friend "Jamie" (backed up by hours & hours of recorded phone calls between the two).. convinced of a tragic combination of latent mental illness (paranoia + schizoid conspiracy thinking), numerology-based reasoning [specifically in becoming obsessed with ARGs (Alternative Reality Games)], and online grooming.
The piece - presented like an 'Investigation Discovery' documentary - is collated well, researched well, and interesting. I found Aaronson's take eye-opening.. but the subject matter never really grabbed me for some reason.

As to presentation, production values are polished & exemplary (including judicial musical emphasis, for example).. but the selection of interviews included some far-too-conversational recorded phone-call excerpts that didn't add much to the discussion.

In toto, I rate this 'Into the Madness' audiobook 6.5/10-stars. I enjoyed the thought-provoking time spent on it.. but can't recommend spending a Credit on the product if it leaves the 'Plus' menu.

its a good story, but I didn't find anything overly strange, just another troll, doing his trolling and a vulnerable woman who fell for the conspiracies.

he said it would be shocking, but there really wasn't any shock value.

I was really drawn into this, and love documentaries. If this is your first go around and like documentaries I highly recommend

First book I listened too

“4. MR. FBI AGENT” @ 2.11 I had to save a clip of the FBI agent talking- he comments on the “ENDERFIN SYSTEM” which is not a thing- maybe the endocrine system? The adrenal system? Endorphins? That was so yucky to hear.

The reporter that created this true crime pod cast/ audiobook is awesome. He did a great job and the narration is good… but ugh, great highlight of our broken law enforcement & legal systems. I enjoyed this interesting outlook on the psychology of how difficult it is, overall, to be a human in this time of life. Random review- but that’s all I got lol

On chapter 4 and I just had to comment…

This feels like it should have stayed in the vault. A painful listen, ramblings of a mentally ill groupie try to rationalize that the boy she admires is a murderer. Yes the author grounds it by inserting his and the fathers rational opinions, but I feel this should have ended when the author realized the subject of the story was just a self affirming, obsessive and mentally ill young woman who wouldnt accept any reality other than the conspiracy she was told by the one she loves.

huge fan of this author/reporter, but not this one
