À propos de cet audio

High-stakes combat in a pitiless universe. Iron Dogs is a sci-fi adventure in which human bravery and technology come up against the might of an alien war machine in the harshest of environments.

Humanity is within months of losing an interstellar war to a species of aliens known as Fangrin. Giving up isn’t an option. Victory doesn’t seem like an option either. When Commander Jake Griffin is sent out with the Eternity carrier group to hunt down and destroy enemy facilities, he has no idea what’s coming to him. The planet Graxol-4 out in the middle of nowhere hides a critical enemy base with vital resources just waiting to be stolen. The only problem is, it’s guarded by a war fleet and surface troops, while the planet itself is toxic and gripped by constant storms. Victory on Graxol-4 may not win the war, but it will buy time for humanity to regroup, toughen up and come back harder.

Anthony James doesn't offer much in the way of plot - instead choosing to essentially document a futuristic confrontation between humanity and an Alien species known as 'The Fangrin'. Set-piece encounters between spacecraft in orbit around a remote planet ('Graxol-4') and in-the-trenches firefights on the surface are well-choreographed, well-described, and well-paced.. but lack context. Why, exactly, are we fighting these things? This book describes a single campaign in a disappointingly ill-defined Galactic War. I'm surprised that this book opens the 'Fire and Rust' series (I actually checked to see if I had downloaded Book Four or something).

As to presentation: the product is solidly "average". Reader Andy Ingalls demonstrates admirable enthusiasm - emotive & eager - but doesn't demonstrate anything particularly praiseworthy. Whole Story/QUEST Audio could have gotten similar results with any professional narrator in their stable.

Altogether, 'Iron Dogs' was a serviceable action-packed distraction for free.. but when this 5/10 star audiobook leaves the 'Plus' catalog, there are better options available for your Credit.

MINOR SPOILER BELOW:

The introduction of a third hostile species into the conflict renews much-needed tension in the narrative. Bravo, Mr. James.

A solid story with a few good twists. Definitely getting book 2. Would love to see models of the ships and the various battle armor.

Has all the makings of a great movie franchise
