À propos de cet audio
One of the most beloved and best-selling novels of spiritual adventure ever published, Ishmael has earned a passionate following. This special 25th anniversary edition features a new foreword and afterword by the author.
“A thoughtful, fearlessly low-key novel about the role of our species on the planet...laid out for us with an originality and a clarity that few would deny.” (The New York Times Book Review)
Teacher Seeks Pupil.
Must have an earnest desire to save the world.
Apply in person.
It was just a three-line ad in the personals section, but it launched the adventure of a lifetime.
So begins an utterly unique and captivating novel. It is the story of a man who embarks on a highly provocative intellectual adventure with a gorilla - a journey of the mind and spirit that changes forever the way he sees the world and humankind’s place in it.
In Ishmael, which received the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship for the best work of fiction offering positive solutions to global problems, Daniel Quinn parses humanity’s origins and its relationship with nature, in search of an answer to this challenging question: How can we save the world from ourselves?

Praise for Ishmael
“As suspenseful, inventive, and socially urgent as any fiction or nonfiction you are likely to read this or any other year.” (The Austin Chronicle)
“Before we’re halfway through this slim book...we’re in [Daniel Quinn’s] grip, we want Ishmael to teach us how to save the planet from ourselves. We want to change our lives.” (The Washington Post)
“Arthur Koestler, in an essay in which he wondered whether mankind would go the way of the dinosaur, formulated what he called the Dinosaur’s Prayer: ‘Lord, a little more time!’ Ishmael does its bit to answer that prayer and may just possibly have bought us all a little more time.” (Los Angeles Times)

“A thoughtful, fearlessly low-key novel about the role of our species on the planet...laid out for us with an originality and a clarity that few would deny.” (The New York Times Book Review)
“[Quinn entraps] us in the dialogue itself, in the sweet and terrible lucidity of Ishmael’s analysis of the human condition.... It was surely for this deep, clear persuasiveness of argument that Ishmael was given its huge prize.” (The Washington Post)
“It is as suspenseful, inventive, and socially urgent as any fiction or nonfiction book you are likely to read this or any other year.” (The Austin Chronicle)
I am astounded by the fact Daniel Quinn wrote whole books in answer to questions readers had about Ishmael. I think that's a testament to the story's success and to the author's dedication to a story he spent so long researching and trying again and again to figure out how to write. I'm so honoured to have read this.
I'm a blubbering mess!! I can't think of a time where a book has made me so emotional, so reflective, and both critical of it's message and deeply stricken by it. This story has opened something inside me. Wounds and opportunities for growth.
It is...humbling. I feel the need to DO something with everything I've read. To to take action. But I also feel like I don't know what to do, like it is too big to undertake by myself. I feel slightly helpless in some regard.
Some of the message I am warry of.
‼️SPOILERS BELOW‼️
‼️A thought that troubled me while reading was that if humans were to stop increasing food production to only feed a certain number of people in order to help prevent an unsustainable population growth, who would be the demographics that go hungry? My concern is that this would impact a lot of marginalized communities and poorer communities. If this is this case, this seems like a roundabout justification for a form of eugenics.
In another part of the part, Ishmael does talk about the necessity of diversity for ecosystems to survive. I'm concerned that a lot of our diversity would be at risk if this kind of food production limit was implemented.
I have no answers for how to stop our concerning population growth and maybe the answer is regulating food production, but maybe it isn't. It's a heavy notion to consider.
This is not a topic I'm well educated in at all. So maybe my concerns are off; maybe I am misunderstanding the messaging in regards to how this food production would affect demographics. I just didn't want to recommend this book wholeheartedly to people without touching on this and mentioning my apprehension with one part. I did read the 25th anniversary edition which included an extra chapter, going into this topic of food production slightly more.
Did anyone else feel similarly with this issue? Does anyone think I misunderstood the messaging? I'd love for people to tell me their interpretations and impressions from this particular problem raised, or any other topic!! Just be sure to preface your comment with "SPOILER"☺️ ‼️
Other than that, I'm so glad I finally got around to finishing this book. I can't believe I may have gone my whole life not having read this book. I'm thankful I won't. ❤️ I definitely want to pick up some of Daniel Quin's other books!!! 😍
