Histoire
The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is the first time William dies.

The world’s food supply grows aggressively, occupying every inch of earth, no matter how inhospitable. World hunger is averted. Humanity flourishes. RC-714 is digested, absorbed…and passed on. The Change affects small fast-breeding mammals first. They multiply with the same aggressive speed as the ExoGen plants, but an insatiable hunger drives them to violence. A war between species breaks out. When RC-714 reaches humanity, along with every other large creature on the planet, civilization implodes.

Freeman is a genius with an uncommon mixture of memory, intelligence and creativity. He lives in a worldwide utopia, but it was not always so. There was a time known as the Grind—when Freeman’s people lived as slaves to another race referred to simply as “Master.” They were property. But a civil rights movement emerged. Change seemed near, but the Masters refused to bend. Instead, they declared war. And lost. Now, the freed world is threatened by a virus, spread through bites, sweeping through the population.

Lincoln Miller, an ex-Navy SEAL turned NCIS special agent, is sent to Aquarius, the world’s only sub-oceanic research facility, located off the Florida Keys, to investigate reports of ocean dumping. A week into his stay, strange red flakes descend from the surface. Scores of fish are dead and dying, poisoned by the debris that turns to powder in Miller’s fingers and tastes like blood. Miller heads for the surface, ready to fight whoever is polluting on his watch. But he finds nothing. No ships. No polluters.... No oxygen.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Description
Mark Hawkins, former park ranger and expert tracker, is out of his element, working onboard the Magellan, a research vessel studying the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. But his work is interrupted when, surrounded by 30 miles of refuse, the ship and its high-tech systems are plagued by a series of strange malfunctions and the crew is battered by a raging storm.
When the storm fades and the sun rises, the beaten crew awakens to find themselves anchored in the protective cove of a tropical island...and no one knows how they got there. Even worse, the ship has been sabotaged, two crewmen are dead, and a third is missing. Hawkins spots signs of the missing man onshore and leads a small team to bring him back. But they quickly discover evidence of a brutal history left behind by the island’s former occupants: Unit 731, Japan’s ruthless World War II human experimentation program. Mass graves and military fortifications dot the island, along with a decades-old laboratory housing the remains of hideous experiments.
As more crew members start to disappear, Hawkins realizes that they are not alone. In fact, he suspects they were brought to this strange and horrible island. The crew is taken one by one, and while Hawkins fights to save his friends, he learns the horrible truths: Island 731 was never decommissioned and the person taking his crewmates may not be a person at all - not anymore.

It Was A Difficult Write, But An Incredible Listen
I believe it’s said in the book that it was a difficult novel for Robinson to write. I wish that wasn’t the case, but it was such an amazing book. Learning the history, thinking of the atrocities that man is capable of…we do need to be reminded of that from time to time, but added in, the sci-fi and the suspense. It was a wonderfully told story and one I will relisten to over and over. I especially admire how Robinson can discuss dark topics, while infusing some humour into it. A big thank you to Bray for bringing it to life! Not everyone understands humour in the darkness, but if you’ve worked in certain fields, you truly understand the need for it. I hope others can see it for what it is, blowing off steam.

AI could have written a less cliched novel
Rarely do I stop listening 25 minutes into a novel. Once I hit the endless description of the turtle autopsy early on (after the absolutely cliched opening scene on the boat with the protagonists), I pulled the plug. It was like he used a character template for each character. Funny how all the women as described in terms of attractiveness, but not the men. This is weak sauce.

Beware of your next Pacific cruise
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
If you are into gruesome descriptions of genetic manipulation, this one is for you. If not, then not so much.
What was most disappointing about Jeremy Robinson’s story?
It relies upon gore far too much, and some of the suspension of disbelief required is a true stretch. Dragged on abit as well. So so overall.
What three words best describe R. C. Bray’s voice?
Strong
Authentic
Consistent
Was Island 731 worth the listening time?
50/50.
Any additional comments?
There are a number of books in this genre of gruesome fantasy, and this one is not the best, The ideas are there, and overall it's ok, but the devil is always in the details, and I fear this one has been left alone in that area.
Recommended with alot of reservations.

Most Likely Exactly What You're Looking For
I picked up Island 731 expecting an action-packed B-Movie that would keep me coming back for more. That's exactly what I got.
I enjoyed this book. The narration is great and well-paced. As some other reviewers have pointed out, the characters aren't especially well-developed, but I wasn't expecting some moving treatise on the human condition--I was looking for thrills & chills. This book has them.
I think if you're someone who read the synopsis of this book and thought, "This sounds interesting," then it's a pretty safe bet Island 731 is for you.

THIS PLACE IS WICKED SCARY
WEATHER OUT THE WEATHER
Paralyzed solider, bird eating his leg, strapped to a table, lift your arm, that's not my arm!!, shark attack, mutilated turtle, gross autopsy, weird experiment, storm, jungle, pill box, rats, flying lizards, mass grave of mutilated bodies. Well, so much for the first 30 minutes. If you like a lot of action, this is the book for you. It is go, go, go, one danger after another, never ending danger.
I WORK IN A HIGH SCHOOL, I KNOW PINING WHEN I SEE IT.
Okay, I admit that there is a huge sophomore living in me. I love a book, with biological oddities, man made or not. I love a book with mad scientists. I love a book where something new happens every chapter. This book has all of that. You don't want to listen to this all at once, as it would wear you out. Your heart will need a break. Plus this is the first of a series, of which I have already read the third book. I am getting the second book.
I LIKE TO NAME THINGS
R.C. Bray, who you should know from the Mountain Man Omnibus is once again excellent.

The Best Listen I Have Ever Had
Would you listen to Island 731 again? Why?
Absolutely. This book had so much action that it kept me awake almost all night. There are very few listens that I have had such a hard time stopping.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Bray, the high school biology teacher, was may favorite character due to his smart remarks and addition of color to the story. I also had a high school teacher by the name of Bray that acted very much like the one in the story.
Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite scene is the moment when the crew was being chased by the BFS's.
Any additional comments?
I have listened to 12 books on audio so far, some of them 40+ hours long, and none of them have even come close to the intensity and excitement of this one. At first I wasn't so sure I liked the narration, but it soon grew on me. The narrator clearly distinguishes between voices (this hasn't been the case in many of my listens) and adds excitement to every word. This book as led me to listen to more of this author's works.

Follow the goat...
A sea of trash, Chimeras (an artificially produced individual having tissues of several species), secret island facilities holding human experiments, deception, explosions, a race against complete annihilation and those pesky turtle/scorpion/spider creatures. All of that and more await you in this fantastic novel by Jeremy Robinson. Get ready for so much nail-biting edge of your seat action you wont be able to stop it until your through.
R. C. Bray narrates the novel. When I first started the audiobook, I was not even sure if I could listen the whole way though. But given some time and the will to persevere through the novel, By the end his narrations will end up on your wish list.
5 stars across the board for this amazing novel. If your a fan of Lincoln Child's "Terminal Freeze" I suggest you getting this TODAY. And when your finished, I highly suggest another Jeremy Robinson novel "Second World".

Action-Packed Science Fiction
A research ship is lured to an island run amok with monsterous human experiments, mutants and at least one really mad scientist. The story isn't complex and the "science" is a bit thin but the story will hold your interest with non-stop action.

Pretty freaky, but pretty good.
Rc is one of the best narrators I've heard. He would make a crappy book good. The story here is good and entertaining.

Interesting fun story
This was a fun, fast-paced, engaging story with good character development, several harrowing moments and some poignant ones as well. Enjoyed the story and narrator very much.
