Description

Headstrong American heiress Lillian Bowman has come to England to find an aristocratic husband. Unfortunately, no man is strong enough to tame the stubborn beauty's fierce will. Except, perhaps, the powerful and arrogant Earl of Westcliff - a man Lillian despises more than anyone she's ever met.

Marcus, Lord Westcliff, is famous for his icy English reserve and his supreme self-control. But something about the audacious Lillian drives him mad. Whenever they're in the same room, they can't stop themselves from battling furiously to gain the upper hand.

Then one afternoon, a stunningly sensuous encounter changes everything...and Lillian discovers that beneath the earl's reserved façade, he is the passionate and tender lover of her dreams. What neither Westcliff nor Lillian suspect, however, is that a sinister conspiracy threatens to destroy any chance of happiness. After a shocking betrayal endangers Lillian's safety - and possibly her life - will Marcus be able to save her before it's too late?

Sigh

My favourite narrator but her American accents are not the best in this book. It’s the last she narrates in this series.

I enjoyed this book overall until the ending and , no spoilers, it just got unbelievable and made no sense. It is used to flow into the next book so it’s hard to get past for me.

As I reviewed in the 1st book this series has lots of curse words and sex. It did feel that this worsens each book. I prefer the story part myself as the author is talented.

Loved it

Lisa Kleypas is one of my favourite historical romance authors and this is just another example why. The story works in such a way that the affection between the main characters is sincere and honest and that the challenges they face only bring them closer together. Not only is the novel on its own enjoyable, but the entire series is amazing. I like to think of it as the Marsden saga because, even though the Earl or his family isn’t in every book of the series, the series starts and ends with them. I recommend starting with Again the Magic, working your way through the Wallflower series, snap up the Hathaways, into the Ravenels and then ending with Devil In Disguise (though I hope there will be many more instalments!)

Strong woman irked by heroine

I do love a story that includes a strong female lead. I find Lillian to be an immature obstinate stupid female for most of this book who isn't strong against anything real. She just wants to be disagreeable.

There was a scene in here where she goes off to prove she can ride a horse side saddle through a difficult jumping course, just to prove how strong she is. Her sister points out that she is used to riding astride and is not a strong rider side saddle. But, by golly, she has to prove she can do it and defies everyone and risks her own life to try. I didn't see a strong woman. I saw a petty child stomping her foot and throwing a tantrum. And OF COURSE she barely clears the first jump and slightly injurs her leg in the process before her horse is taken away from her.

Even near the end when she's wrestling in bed, it's still a childish headstrong type of wrestling instead of a sexy grown up type of wrestling.

The story was really good, but I really wish it had REALLY been about a strong female.

Great narration with big chunks of story missing!

As per usual, Rosalyn Landor gives an excellent narration! She is my favorite audible narrator BY FAR! The reason for my 3-star review of this audiobook is because there are big chunks of the original book version and story MISSING from the audiobook! I've listened to many audiobooks now and I've never had this issue before! A good chunk of the prologue is not narrated at all, and TWO pretty significant sex scenes are also missing from the audiobook completely. I'm not sure what the point of this was. The only thing I can think of is because many readers and critics of IHOA consider the first sex scene to be pretty controversial. However, the second one is also missing completely and for no real reason.

This is especially frustrating because I like to listen to the audiobook as I read along! It caused me confusion and frustration as I lost my place several times and had to jump ahead or jump back throughout the book, causing me to pause and miss important little things and situations throughout the story. This was a bummer, and I don't think I'll be listening to the the audiobook as I read along anymore to make sure this doesn't happen again.

WONDERFUL story, narrator not great

Wonderful story in print! Loved! Two downsides of audio version: (1) the narrator adopts female voices that make them sound dopey, and it was honestly hard to "hear" these amazing female characters sound so dumb; (2) this audio version is missing key content from the print version I own. At least an entire chapter, and an important one: the first time that Lilian and Westcliff have “sexual congress”—is missing. There might be more content missing. But I didn’t have time to do cross checking. I contacted Audible and they're looking into it.

Story us slightly altered

It's really disheartening when books are revised to adhere to a sensitive audience. *spoiler alert* in the original story, Marcus seduces Lilly when she's drunk after the scene in the library where she gets her finger stuck in a brandy bottle. It's at that point she loses her virginity, which is part of what prompts Marcus to "take responsibility" and offer marriage. Obviously this scenario can be construed as rape, despite the fact that Lilly has already demonstrated herself to be a willing participant in their sexual exchanges multiple times throughout the book prior to this particular incident. I'm assuming this was the cause for revision. *end of spoiler* I thought I was crazy, having read the book before, as I listened and envisioned a different plotline than was told in this audible version. I personally liked the original plotline better.

Loving this series so far

The author has a great way of writing conversation, as well as delving into the characters who are talking. She does this without over explaining or going on and on like some authors do. I can see everything she describes brilliantly!
I disagree with other reviews about Lillian. She is headstrong and bullish and downright stubborn, but she’s not a brat. She’s clever and daring. I love this romance. Though I don’t understand how we are supposed to come to terms with Sebastian in the next book in the series. I was shocked towards the end of this book that he seemed so evil. It will be interesting. This series is so clever, I love it and can’t wait to continue it to the end!

I like the series, this one was alright

I generally enjoyed this book, however I felt like something was lacking as I didn’t fall in love with the main female character. I’m usually easily able to identify with the lead characters and enjoy the story through them, but in this case, I didn’t feel that there was anything very exceptionally that would make the lead man change so much for her.
I liked the narrator and the rest of the characters and will read the next book in the series but this one was not my favorite.

Excellent

I very much enjoyed the love/hate relationship between Marcus and Lilian and how it turned into a sweet uncomplicated romance . Well done LK!
