Description

In his New York Times best-selling chronicle of military life, Anthony Swofford weaves his experiences in war with vivid accounts of boot camp, reflections on the mythos of the marines, and remembrances of battles with lovers and family.

When the U.S. Marines, or "jarheads", were sent to Saudi Arabia in 1990 for the first Gulf War, Anthony Swofford was there. He lived in sand for six months; he was punished by boredom and fear; he considered suicide, pulled a gun on a fellow marine, and was targeted by both enemy and friendly fire. As engagement with the Iraqis drew near, he was forced to consider what it means to be an American, a soldier, a son of a soldier, and a man.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"A searing contribution to the literature of combat." (The New York Times)
"This book offers...the casual reader, an unflinching portrayal of the loneliness and brutality of modern warfare and sophisticated analyses of, and visceral reactions to, its politics." (Publishers Weekly)

Expensive compared to the movie

But the monotone narrative read by the author in monotone. Relentlessly continuing from hour to hour, lacking any charm or chance that this delivery could've been designed on purpose to imitate the language in a military handbook.

A Mind Blowing Look Into Another World

Mr. Swofford really gives a look into the extremely difficult life of Marines. After listening to this book, I realized that civilians may think they understand how difficult and terrible a veteran's life has been while serving, but we'll NEVER know. We will always be simply, civilians. No civilian WILL NEVER understand unless said civilian has served. It's easy to see, after listening to this book, why some come home with PTSD, no matter what war. And you may say "there was no PTSD before this war or that war" but there was. It was just given a different name. I'm Canadian, but I revere and will always be grateful to men like Mr. Swofford until the day I inhale my last breath. Honor ALL veterans regardless of what they did while in the armed forces or where they served. A veteran will always deserve our respect no matter where they come from, no matter what their duties were.
