Description

For the first time Gacy’s lawyer and confidant tells his chilling tale of how he defended an American serial killer.

“Sam, could you do me a favor?”

Thus begins a story that has now become part of America's true-crime hall of fame. It is a gory, grotesque tale befitting a Stephen King novel. It is also a David and Goliath saga - the story of a young lawyer fresh from the public defender's office whose first client in private practice turns out to be the worst serial killer in our nation's history. This is a gripping true crime narrative that reenacts the gruesome killings and the famous trial that shocked a nation.

Interesting until the transphobic chapter

This book has pros and cons.
From a true crime fan perspective, the description of Gacys final kill was very well done, and the author's legal interviews with Gacy are fascinating.
However, at one point in the book a trans woman is outed in court, which leads into a monolog from the author about how trans women are supposedly freaks of nature and "living a lie". If this book had been published shortly after the trial, I might have been able to look over the blatant transphobia, but the book was pushed in 2011.

Transphobic commentary spoiled it

I was thoroughly enjoying this book until the transphobic commentary. Being published in 2011, the author had an opportunity to reflect, learn and reframe from the poor transphobic rhetoric he made during this trial in the 1980's. Trans women are women, not "whatever." Do better.

the defense lawyer's case did not age well

but I won't hold it up to today's standards of basic human decency. it takes a strong person to ensure that due process is given, and recognize that it's not always about "defending the actions" or claiming innocence, but making sure that every single box is ticked to ensure that monsters stay in jail.

however, the transphobia in the defense definitely did not age well at ALL.

I had to keep reminding myself that this happened.

A long walk down a dark path. Interesting and repulsive at the same time. Truly a disturbed individual who terrorized his victims and destroyed lives.

Worst. Narrator. Ever.

This is the first time I've HAD to increase the narration speed (up to 1.3x made it more... 'normal' sounding). Robin Bloodworth has these weirdly timed sighs and breaths, like in the middle of words and sentences. He reads out numbers as though dictating them to someone taking notes. Like any listener needs to remember D/L #s or phone numbers from 1978. Reads too slowly with odd pauses, strange inflections and bizarre cadence. I can't even remember what the book was about.... no no, I'm just clowning around.

Interesting and well written

I put off listening to this one for a while because it's about Gacy, one of the most famous serial murderers ever. I mean, what more could be said? I'd read and watched so much about him already. I thought it might be boring. it wasn't.

Although a lot of books can be good and easy to follow, very few are actually well written in my opinion. Very few use interesting words and phrases. this one does in some spots.

The way that the author (Gacy's lawyer) talks about himself is amusing. He's quite the character himself. He was definitely born to be a lawyer. He does seem to be very naive though, especially for a lawyer. He seems completely oblivious to obvious signs and traits of a serial killer; signs that any good true crime aficionado would readily recognize.

As far as the narration goes, I agree with someone else's review when they said that the narrator sighs a lot, unnecessarily. He also seems to randomly change his voice for no apparent reason. It's weird. But overall, it's not too distracting, and he does a decent job.

An excellent insight

I really enjoy reading books from lawyers with high profile cases. This book didn't disappoint. There's enough about the author to give you a strong sense of who he is without bogging down the story in his autobiography. The details of John. Wayne Gacy, his personality, his upbringing, his life are told in logical way. I found the police case, the documents files, and the legal arguments very interesting.

Very clearly presented.

Phenomenal !

Great insight to a monster's mind, and why he would be defended.

I believe that the story within contains at least 80% fact, and is unbiased.
