"Richard Armitage...steps in and sweeps us away on his deep, velvety voice, one much worth the marathon listening time. Listeners will know they are in for a treat immediately as they hear his voice change between reading the front matter and the first moments of the novel...this new edition offers improved sound quality, Schwab's narration, and a standout delivery from Armitage. A must-buy."—Booklist

Winner of the World Fantasy Award, the Hugo Award, and the Locus Award for Best First Novel

At the dawn of the nineteenth century, two very different magicians emerge to change England's history. In the year 1806, with the Napoleonic Wars raging on land and sea, most people believe magic to be long dead in England—until the reclusive Mr Norrell reveals his powers, and becomes a celebrity overnight.

Soon, another practicing magician comes forth: the young, handsome, and daring Jonathan Strange. He becomes Norrell's student, and they join forces in the war against France. But Strange is increasingly drawn to the wildest, most perilous forms of magic, straining his partnership with Norrell, and putting at risk everything else he holds dear.

“Clarke's imagination is prodigious, her pacing is masterly and she knows how to employ dry humor in the service of majesty.”—The New York Times on Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

“What kind of magic can make an 800-page novel seem too short? Whatever it is, debut author Susanna Clarke is possessed by it.”—USA Today on Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

“Utterly enchanting. [Clarke's] union of historical fiction and fantasy is fresh, it is surprising, and it will appeal to those who want nothing more than to be carried away to a world crafted by a superb storyteller.”—Denver Post on Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

23 hours in, 33 to go, I’m bailing on this. I feel like I gave it a fair chance.

The structure

PERFORMANCE: Richard Armitage is marvelous. He may well be the best narrator I've ever heard. His range of British character voices is immense. This book felt like a full-cast audio drama. His inflections for the comical characters (like Mr. Drawlight) are delightful. The fuddy-duddy Mr. Norrell is both heartwarmingly sympathetic and insufferably neurotic, sometimes in the same scene. Armitage truly elevates the material.

STORY: The book was written episodically, like a Dickens novel, without a preconceived blueprint for the story's development. There certainly is an overall plot; however, its progress is achingly slow with a great many tangents. Not all readers will see the appeal in this. The novel can feel sprawling and aimless. However, it does come together remarkably well for those who persevere. For myself, I found the amusements of each chapter to be reward enough. The author's prose is charming and cheeky (rather like Dickens, actually), and I was entertained throughout.

OVERALL: Not a book for everyone—those looking for suspense and cliffhanger thrills should turn to other material. However, those who enjoy excellent writing, well-drawn characters, and dry wit will find a feast in this book. If in doubt, read the first page (of the actual book, not the introduction) and you'll know whether or not it's for you.

Witty and whimsical

loved it and the narrator does a great job 👍 the start can feel a bit slow but it's worth it. The ending didn't quite land with me tbh but it was fine. I'm mostly nitpicking and endings are hard... or maybe I'm just not clever enough to enjoy it as much 💁‍♂️😂

Clever, fun, immersive 👌

Everything about this book was...magical. Not least Mr. Armitage 's narration. I did not want it to end. A masterful book, and masterful production. This is a book I think I will only ever listen to, Mr Armitage brings it to life.

so sad it is over
